About this audiobook

When I first landed a bartending job at the local guild, I didn't know a thing about magic. These days, I'm practically an expert on the different magical classes, but there's one nobody ever talks about: Demonica.

Turns out they have a good reason for that. My guild is strictly hellion-free, because who wants to risk life and limb to control the biggest bullies on the mythic playground?

Well, some people do, and now a demon has been loosed in the city. My three best friends are determined to slay it, but even badass combat mages are critically out-magicked. And that's not all. The monster they're tracking-it's not hiding. It's not fleeing. It's not leaving a trail of corpses everywhere it goes.

The demon is hunting too. And in a city full of mythics, it's searching for deadlier prey.

If we can't unravel the demon's sinister motivations, more innocent people will die, but finding the answers means digging into dark secrets . . . and learning truths I never wanted to know.

Make sure to check out the companion series, The Guild Codex: Demonized, available now, and The Guild Codex: Warped, coauthored by Rob Jacobsen, available summer 2020.

I am really enjoying this series, even though Tori is kind of a doofus. She makes mistakes, but a lot of them are understandable in context.

This originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader as a part of a Quick Takes Catch-up post, emphasizing pithiness, not thoroughness.---So, um...yeah. This was okay. For the second book in a row, we get to peel back the mysterious backstory of one of Tori's new best friends while they're battling a new magical threat. This time it's demons—and rival guilds. One of which is pretty ethically challenged. It was a bit too similar to the previous book for me. But it delivered the same kind of quippy UF action that characterizes the series. It's entertaining enough to keep going with the series—and to recommend them—I just want to see a little more out of them.

Series Info/Source: This is the third book in the Guild Codex: Spellbound series. I borrowed this through Kindle Unlimited. There are going to be seven books total in this series. There is also a sister series to this called Guild Codex: Demonized that weaves in and out of the Spellbound timeline but features different characters. Previous to reading this I have read and enjoyed all of Annette Marie’s other series.Story (5/5): I really continue to love this series. In this book demons enter the story in a big way. When Tori’s guild gets notified that a demon is on the loose in the city, things go into a near wartime-like status as all guilds work to hunt the demon down. Ezra and Tori end up stuck at guild headquarters trying to coordinate efforts from there, but as things worsen they are forced to take to the field with Kai and Aaron. What follows are some serious revelations both about demons and about Ezra’s past.Characters (5/5): This continues to be a very character driven series and I absolutely love all of the characters here. This book really features Ezra, as we start to unlock his mysterious past. While I did miss our mischievous druid and Tori’s fae housemate, I did enjoy the addition of some new characters.. One of the new characters introduced is Page who is featured in The Guild Codex: Demonized series, from what little I saw here I think I am really going to like her!Setting (4/5): The setting in this book was a bit weaker than others. Almost the whole book takes place in the Guild, this was fine but not as exciting as some of the settings in the previous books. Marie does continue to do a great job expanding this world, it has a lot of depth and complexity which I feel like we are still only scratching the surface of. Writing Style (5/5): I am a huge fan of Marie’s writing style and continue to enjoy it here. The story is fast-paced, very easy to read and engage with and impossible to put down. Marie does an amazing job with both characterization and fight scenes. I am also really enjoying the magic system in this series too. Absolutely no complaints, I love it!My Summary (5/5): Overall this continues to be an amazing urban fantasy series. It is full of fast-paced action, wonderful magic, and amazing characters. I also really enjoy the humor throughout. I would recommend if you are a fan of fun, fast-paced urban fantasies with a lot of magic.

4.5Book source ~ Kindle UnlimitedTori Dawson is a college student, a bartender, and now a human witch. Well, her guild and everyone in the mythical community, including their ruling body MagiPol, thinks she’s an actual witch who was just a late bloomer. Like, really really late. But nope. She’s definitely human. Not a speck of magic except in the artifacts she carries. And her secret has to stay secret or she’ll be booted out of the guild and forced to go back to a mundane life. Not something she ever wants to do. So, now it’s Halloween and her guild is expecting a party at the pub. Tori’s not big on doing it, but for her guild, she will. Except MagiPol issues an emergency and the party is cancelled. There’s a demon on the loose and all guilds are to drop everything and hunt it down before it leaves a trail of bodies in its wake. The Crow and Hammer have no Demonica mythic, so Tori is about to get a crash course in demons. I can already tell you, this isn’t going to end well. These books are so entertaining! I’m so glad I found the first one and that there were several more for me to devour. This is book 4 and I’m enjoying it just as much as book 1. There’s a demon on the loose and it’s terrifying. There’s more demon info in this book than the previous ones because there’s no demon mythic in the Crow and Hammer. Well, not officially anyway. With a scary demon on the loose Tori is about to get a crash course in them while her friends are out hunting and fighting it. I love the characters, the world, the humor, and the near non-stop action. I even love the danger to my beloved characters. How sick is that? lol Each book builds on the previous. While it’s not strictly necessary to read the first books, I highly recommend doing so to get the full experience. And after this one, I strongly suggest reading the 1st book in the Guild Codex: Demonized series, Taming Demons for Beginners, before proceeding to book 5 of this series. Go forth and enjoy!

Demon Magic and a Martini is the fourth book in the Guild Codex series by Annette Marie. A demon has been let loose on the city and Tori Dawson, or more specifically her three best mage friends, have decided they're going to kill it. Not afraid of being outclassed, the mages start tracking the beast just and quickly realize they're being hunted in return. This was one wild ride! Finally more information about the Demonica mythic class. And, more importantly, this was Ezra's book!! My goodness is this boy keeping one hell of a secret. Turns out there are worse things than demons in this universe. As you can imagine the story takes a darker turn and it's so much fun that its set during Halloween. One of the great things about this series is how Tori is forced to grow as a character, this time facing down her trust issues and how she lies to herself. She takes a very human approach as Tori tries to evade the choices she must make until she's finally ready to face her inner demons head on in a similar way that the guys are tackling the magical equivalent. The timing and theming works out well.I continue to listen to the series narrated by Cris Dukehart. While some of the background character voices started to overlap, Dukehart continues captures Tori's voice and personality perfectly.
