About this audiobook
It is the year 871, when England was Angle-Land. Of seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, five have fallen to the invading Vikings. No trait is more valued than loyalty, and no possession more precious than one's steel. Across this war-torn landscape travels 15-year-old Ceridwen, now thrust into the lives of the conquerors.
Lost in the frozen woods, Ceridwen is discovered by the warriors accompanying young Aelfwyn, daughter of a Saxon lord, sold against her will in marriage as part of a peace treaty with a marauding Viking war chief. Their destination is the captured fortress of Four Stones, a ruin holding glittering treasure. There Aelfwyn must keep her vow and wed Yrling - and Ceridwen must do all she can to support her new friend in the rebuilding of the ravaged village and great hall.
But living with the enemy affords Ceridwen unusual freedoms - and unlooked-for conflicts. Amongst them she explores again her own heathen past, and learns to judge each man on his own merits. Yrling's nephews Sidroc and Toki, both formidable warriors yet as different as night and day, compete to win Ceridwen for their own.
Through both guile and goodness Ceridwen and Aelfwyn begin transforming the world of Four Stones. But the threat of full-scale war escalates, and a midnight party of furtive Danes delivers someone to Four Stones who destroys the girls' hopes of peace and contentment. Now Ceridwen must summon all her courage - a courage which will be sorely tested as she defies both Saxon and Dane and undertakes an extraordinary adventure to save a man she has never met.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely beautiful narration. Illustrative and accurate period prose with a beautiful story.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5What a horrible narrator! I seldom make such a harsh criticism but I was often tempted to simply stop listening because of the annoying narration.
At times it sounded like she would read a parody. The heroine sounded like an overhyped Barbi from the middle ages, the male characters simply comical. Grrr.
The story was okay, but it was over romanticized. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent narration. Excellent plot and story line. I love the author’s description of small details of daily life during the turbulent time period surrounding the birth of England. The action scenes were well written and didn’t overpower the story. Other reviewers did not appreciate the romance aspect of the story- I enjoyed it very much! I’ve listened to this series at least 4 times, and it doesn’t get stale.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I’m 2/3 way through and I can’t go on, WHAT FRESH HELL IS THIS?
I love historical fiction and have read or listened to all of the greats re dark and Middle Ages - Cornwell, Harffy, Sansom, Hosker, Edwards, Kristian, etc... I’ve never written a negative review - never written a review at all in fact. But holy crap on a cracker this one is for the ages. Remember (for those of a certain age) those EXCRUCIATING scenes in Attack of the Clones between Natalie Portman and that other dude that absolutely destroyed an otherwise serviceable Star Wars movie? Remember Sofia Coppola ruining The Godfather III? This book is like that only so much worse. Ok so granted I screwed up and listened to Sidroc The Dane first (first in plot line, but not in release). GREAT book. First third of this one is fantastic too. But HOLY CRAP ON A CRACKER what in the lords name is happening with this weak sappy “the Notebook”, stilted forced love story crap with a character (some sorry blind dudebro whiner) that nobody in their right mind would care about or be invested in? It goes on and on and on and on and kill me now IS THIS IT, is THIS REALLY THE STORY NOW?????
Where is Sidroc? Aelflin? Yearling? What kind of cruel mental torture is this???? It’s like some douche from the Jersey Shore showed up in Game of Thrones half way through out of nowhere without a substantial introduction, was blinded, and all of the heroins got a lady boner, he became king of Westeros, and all of the cool masculine characters disappeared, and the whole show was a Nicholas Sparks novel the rest of the way. Just....Wow. Listen at your own risk. I’m out.1 person found this helpful
