"Visceral and haunting" (New York Times Book Review) · "Hopeful" (Washington Post) · "Powerful" (Los Angeles Times) · "Thrilling" (TIME) · "Tantalizingly beautiful" (Elle) · "Suspenseful, atmospheric" (Vogue) · "Aching and poignant" (Guardian)

Franny Stone has always been the kind of woman who is able to love but unable to stay. Leaving behind everything but her research gear, she arrives in Greenland with a singular purpose: to follow the last Arctic terns in the world on what might be their final migration to Antarctica. Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, traveling ever further from shore and safety. But as Franny’s history begins to unspool—a passionate love affair, an absent family, a devastating crime—it becomes clear that she is chasing more than just the birds. When Franny's dark secrets catch up with her, how much is she willing to risk for one more chance at redemption?

Epic and intimate, heartbreaking and galvanizing, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is an ode to a disappearing world and a breathtaking page-turner about the possibility of hope against all odds.

A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books

"Migrations is a nervy and well-crafted novel, one that lingers long after its voyage is over. It’s a story about our mingling sorrows, both personal and global, and the survivor’s guilt that will be left in their wake." - New York Times Book Review

"True and affecting, elegiac and imminent...The fractured timeline fills each chapter with suspense and surprises, parceled out so tantalizingly that it took disciplined willpower to keep from skipping down each page to see what happens...Ultimately hopeful." - The Washington Post

“Thrilling…In piecing together who this mysterious protagonist really is, McConaghy creates a detailed portrait of a woman on the cusp of collapse, consumed with a world that is every bit as broken as she is.” - TIME

Some of the language in this book is so lovely it took my breath away. As did the horrible realization that there is a direct line from where we are now to the future described... when almost all other life on the planet has been wiped out by human consumption and taking of natural resources. As an ecologist I found some of the statements ascribed to scientists ludicrous, as well as the heroine’s ability to survive in cold water. Nevertheless, that poetic license is also what stirs that recognition in me of powerful inherited forces that drive us to yearn to wander and to be free.

Oh, this book. It’s gutting. It’s beautiful. It is ultimately hopeful, and it will stay with you.

Just finished this most beautiful story. I'm weeping. Don't know when a book has brought such emotion. The audio version is spectacular.

In a world with so much formula fiction this singular story with exceptional narration stands far from the crowd.

A novel that evoked quite a few emotional responses as I listened to the audiobook over the course of a few days. An unexpected gem that I don't think I will forget soon.

Beautiful writing, although the story went to much darker places than I was expecting. There's a current of quiet, relentless desperation that propels the story forward, balanced by moments of human connection and tentative hopefulness. It's horrifyingly easy to imagine how close we are to a real animal extinction crisis. Excellent audiobook narration from Barrie Kreinik, especially with the different characters' accents.

The axis of the character is the most interesting point—a tension between staying and leaving, controlling and releasing, drowning and swimming. Our main character is a textured personality who slowly unfurls in front of us until we are left feeling like they are our friend.

As much as it is about an environmental migration, the book is also about the migrations that happen within.

    A good story!

A joy to read. This book gives the reader so much insight about what we could lose if we do not respect other beings’ lives— We could lose respect of our owns too.

This book made me think and revisit the reality of the environment that we currently live in. How far is this reality from our future??

I gave this book 4 stars only because it was not the ending that I felt I was being led to all along. The ending really leaves you wanting in a very disappointing way.

I guess it was ok but I don't like unreliable narrators and I felt the plot and motives behind the main character's action were a bit dumb.
