- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A relatively drama-free, game design life of success.
This was a great book. I must admit I was a bit apprehensive at first given that, since Sid wrote it himself, I feared it would be embellished and self-aggrandizing. But Sid seems to be a pretty humble guy who seemingly avoided much of the soul-crushing, crunch-filled, trauma inducing drama that is all too common in the gaming industry. Combined with his obvious success as a game designer, that's pretty impressive in and of itself.
As a gamer who primarily grew up with RPGs, I must admit I missed most of Sid's strategy games over the last few decades. I dabbled in a pirated copy (sorry!) of Silent Service and bought a few of the MicroProse flight Sims, but the first version of Civ I ever played came late with Civ IV and the Colonization version. Today, Civ VI is in my top 5 games of all time.
Sid's genius is obvious and this book recaps the journey well, though it's more about his life than a behind the scenes development of most games. The original version of Civ, Pirates, and Covert Action get good coverage, but I was hoping for a deeper dive into Starships, Alpha Centauri, Beyond Earth, and others. It certainly gave me an urge to go back and play through Sid's back catalog.
Definitely a great read, well written and accessible, quite entertaining and educational if you're into game design. Highly recommended book. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I was sceptical to listen to a memoir, but Sid turns out to pepper this one with such wisdom, positivity and pure joy for his craft that I will probably listen to it again very soon!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A wonderful review of SIDS experience in the computer industry. I highly recommend this read or listen, and I found a few new games I’m gonna have to check out or old games, In particular that Bach one!
