Our earliest experiences shape our lives far down the road, and What Happened to You? provides powerful scientific and emotional insights into the behavioral patterns so many of us struggle to understand.
“Through this lens we can build a renewed sense of personal self-worth and ultimately recalibrate our responses to circumstances, situations, and relationships. It is, in other words, the key to reshaping our very lives.”—Oprah Winfrey
This audiobook is going to change the way you see your life.
Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question.
Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”
Here, Winfrey shares stories from her own past, understanding through experience the vulnerability that comes from facing trauma and adversity at a young age. In conversation throughout the audiobook, she and Dr. Perry focus on understanding people, behavior, and ourselves. It’s a subtle but profound shift in our approach to trauma, and it’s one that allows us to understand our pasts in order to clear a path to our future—opening the door to resilience and healing in a proven, powerful way.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of the most inspiring and important books I've read (listened to) in years. Thank you Dr. Perry and Oprah for your combined wisdom, compassion and vision. A must read for everyone interested in learning how to recognize and deal with the effects of trauma and neglect (which as we've learned is about what 'didn't happen but should have') Very in line with the fine work of Dr. Gabor Maté.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Whew. Be prepared to ugly cry, maybe a few times. I strongly, strongly recommend the audio version. Hearing the words spoken into you is a very impactful & meaningful experience.
I could go on and on as to why this is a 5 star book and why ugly crying is a GOOD THING. Feeling all the feelings and acceptance go a long way towards healing.
My only tiny critique would be there was a heavy focus on what to do with and/or how to help children from traumatic experience. I think it would be very helpful for virtually all teachers and childcare givers/workers to read this book.
For those of us who are all grown up and survived our trauma, I found myself saying “yes, but HOW” more than once. It’s there. The answer is there. Open yourself to it.
I read/listen to 3-4 books a month and this will definitely be in my top books of 2021. Absolutely recommend.1 person found this helpful

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book brought up a lot of things in my own past. It was meaningful. Especially the end when Oprah spoke about her mother. I lost my mom too. She didn't have an easy start in life. She was SO young when she had my older sister. My mom was only 17 then. Hard to be the ideal mom when you are just a kid yourself. I feel like the words in this book need to be heard by all and also re-listened to more than once... There is a lot to learn. I hope everyone that reads this experiences the healing they need... ❤

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a really compelling listen, made all the more powerful by the fact it was narrated by Oprah and Dr. Perry themselves. I did not personally experience childhood trauma, but understanding the impact of trauma on a person’s life was revelatory. I sincerely believe I will relate better to people in my life now that I have a better understanding of this. It was highly impactful for me. Well done.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Oprah’s co-author makes unscientific assumptions about ADHD. Be aware of his background and claims.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Great book especially for parents and teachers of young children. But I am disappointed that they didn't include what we can actually Do with this knowledge so that we can heal from what happened to us. So in that way I feel that this book is very incomplete as far as being useful for adults.
