David has travelled widely in the developing...view moreDavid Farrell was born in Ireland, emigrated to Canada aged 22 and then settled in Australia where he has been an Australian academic for over 40 years. David has travelled widely in the developing world and has become increasingly concerned about the direction of mankind and the welfare of the poor and disadvantaged especially during the next 35 years. His background is in Agricultural Science specialising to some extent in nutrition and human health. He has published three other books; the most recent is The Academic Apple Tree an Irishman’s unusual journey through life (website: The Academic Apple Tree.com.au). This is an autobiography of a truly remarkable life.
David is a prolific scientist and research worker. He has published over 500 scientific papers, chapters in books and popular articles. He has been invited to speak at meetings and conferences in over 20 countries and consulted for FAO, UNDP and private companies. He is a fellow of the Australian Society of Animal production, The Nutrition Society of Australia and in 2010 was elected to the World Poultry Science Association’s Hall of Fame. Much of what he has written is from personal experiences and observations. He lived in Indonesia for over two years as a research advisor and co-ordinator for the Australian Government.
David’s interest in food and human nutrition and human health brings another dimension to this book. The obesity pandemic sweeping the Western world, and now the new emerging economies, is an impediment to feeding mankind. The overconsumption of animal foods and the increased demand, is not only unhealthy but is using up vast amounts of grain and other human foods to feed livestock. His lifelong interest and experience in the wide range of topics covered in his book makes him well qualified to pen this highly controversial and broad-based topic.view less
