Born in Easton Maryland, he received his B.A. from Washington and Lee University in 1948, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University in 1950 and 1955, respectively. He joined the faculty of the Duke History Department in 1956, and he specialized in 19th century German history. In 1968 and 1971, he served as Director of Undergraduate Studies in the History Department.
His major publications include the books Bismarck’s Rival: A Political Biography of General and Admiral Albrecht von Stosch (1960), Bismarck: Great Lives Observed (1970), and the edited volume of E. Malcolm Carroll’s The Western Powers and Soviet Russia, 1917-1922.
He was promoted to Professor in 1971 and served in that capacity until his death in 1982.view less
