Libéral et anticlérical, il est considéré comme étant l'un des grands historiens du XIXe siècle bien qu'aujourd'hui controversé, notamment pour avoir donné naissance à travers ses ouvrages historiques à une grande partie du « roman national», républicain et partisan, remis en cause par le développement historiographique de la fin du xxe siècle. Il a également écrit différents essais et ouvrages de moeurs dont certains lui valent des ennuis avec l'Église et le pouvoir politique.
