About this ebook

Ever felt mortally embarrassed when all your friends are discussing the merits of "the 5 points of Calvinism" and you don't have the foggiest idea what they're talking about? Ever kicked yourself for not knowing which popes reigned the shortest amount of time? (First on the list is Pope Urban VII, who ruled for a whopping 13 days.)

Well, where else could you find the answer to all your problems, but in A Theological Miscellany-a maddeningly addictive cornucopia of trivia and smorgasbord of stuff that will keep you up late at night, reading just one more page. The best little book of trivia and oddities you'll ever find. . . . And if not the best, then certainly in the top ten.

This little book has lists, trivial information, and a few stats on various Christian denominations (primarily Catholicism and Methodism). However, it is unorganized and unindexed, which would make it useless as a reference book. Essentially, it's interesting bathroom reading.

PREFACE

What you’re holding is more than just a book. It’s a labor of love. It’s blood, sweat, and tears. It’s the sum total of the knowledge I’ve been endowed with by the One who’s seen fit to . . . uh, endow me. It’s gold among the dross of other books. It’s a shining testament to . . .

Okay, maybe it is just a book. But it’s an extraordinarily unique one. In fact, it may very well save you a great deal of embarrassment. How many times have you been at a swanky dinner party when the conversation has turned to the popes who have served the shortest terms, or the five points of Calvinism, or famous bald men in the Bible, only to slink down into your chair in horror, realizing that you had nothing intelligent to add to the conversation? You didn’t even know there were three points of Calvinism, much less five.

Well, be embarrassed no longer! Dive deeply into these pages . . . or skim the surface if you’re afraid to commit. You’ll come away amazed at your newfound sense of assurance in future theological conversations, your grasp of deep philosophical and biblical truths, and your annoyance at having wasted precious hours here while you could have been watching Gilligan’s Island reruns.

Best wishes,

T. J. McTavish

THE FATHERS OF THE CHURCH

The term Fathers of the Church refers to the writings from the early Christian centuries by theologians, preachers, popes, and others. A recent editor remarks, To be regarded as a Father, one must have orthodox doctrine; but this does not exclude all doctrinal error. An occasional material heresy can be found even in the greater lights among the Fathers.

Greek Fathers

Justin Martyr (100–165)

Athenagoras of Athens (late second century)

Irenaeus of Gaul (140–202)

Clement of Alexandria (150–215)

Hippolytus of Rome (170–236)

Eusebius of Caesarea (263–340)

Cyril of Jerusalem (315–386)

Basil the Great (330–379)

Gregory of Nazianzus (329–389)

Gregory of Nyssa (330–395)

Theodore of Mopsuestia (350–428)

John Chrysostom (344–407)

Cyril of Alexandria (died 444)

John of Damascus (675–749)

Latin Fathers

Tertullian (160–220)

Cyprian of Carthage (died 258)

Lactantius (250–317)

Hilary of Poitiers (315–367)

Ambrose of Milan (339–397)

Jerome (342–420)

Augustine of Hippo (354–430)

Prosper of Aquitaine (390–463)

Pope Gregory I the Great (540–604)

THE PSALMS OF PENITENCE

Enter not into judgment with thy servant; for no man living is righteous before thee (Ps. 143:2). This is the mood of seven of the Psalms, traditionally called the Penitential Psalms. In liturgical churches these psalms are often used on Ash Wednesday or during Lent. They are Psalms 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143.

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF EVANGELICALS’

STATEMENT OF FAITH

The National Association of Evangelicals exists to extend the kingdom of God through a fellowship of member denominations, churches, organizations, and individuals, demonstrating the unity of the body of Christ by standing for biblical truth, speaking with a representative voice, and serving the evangelical community through united action, cooperative ministry, and strategic planning.

To that end, the organization embraces this statement of faith:

We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.

We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection,
