- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5According to the author, Abraham Lincoln's father and mother (Thomas and Nancy) were members of a strict strain of the Baptist church, sometimes spoken of as “Hard Shell Baptists,” known for its primitiveness and belief in predestination. As Lincoln became a young man, living on his own in New Salem and Springfield, Illinois (1831-1840s), he reacted negatively toward established Christian institutions and the Bible as God's word. As Lincoln matured, married, fathered children, and experienced personal tragedies, he gradually fostered an approving attitude toward Christ and his church, although he never “joined” a church.I believe the author deserves an “A for Effort” in his attempt to describe Lincoln's religious influences through the various stages of his life up to its end. He cites numerous primary and secondary sources to document his claims.The author attempts to describe a potential influence that revivals associated with Barton W. Stone (pp. 18-24) may have had on Lincoln's parents when they lived in Kentucky, but it is really a guess. Stone, while a Presbyterian at the time of his famous Cane Ridge Revival in 1801, was struggling with the doctrine of predestination that the author maintains the Lincolns believed. After 1804, Stone was to be associated with the Christian Church or Church of Christ, and the Lincolns remained Baptists.The book is enhanced by a number of photos. The appendix includes copies of a number of famous speeches by Lincoln. There is a bibliography but no index.

I felt no need to read another book at the same time.Learning how Lincoln went form an atheist to a believer in a short time, but on his own, was an experience. He was a tremendous man.

He never joined an organized church, but had close ties with several churchmen who were influential in his growth and development as a Christian. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The common perception of Abraham Lincoln is that he was a man whose lifelong, deeply held Christian faith gave him the courage to prosecute a long and bloody war to right one of mankind’s greatest wrongs: slavery. The facts, however, tell a different story about Lincoln’s long journey, a journey that, although it ultimately may have arrived at the same destination, involved numerous sidetracks and obstacles along the way.As Stephen Mansfield notes in Lincoln’s Battle with God (A President’s Struggle with Faith and What It Meant for America):“He was a complicated soul, an innovative mind, and an oppressed spirit. He was raw and earthy and poetic. He could be ambitious and enraged and cold… We can hope to understand. Yet never can we confine him; never can we seek to make him conform.”Abraham Lincoln is, after all, a man who sporadically attended church services but never officially joined a church. During his presidency, he often spoke of God and made Biblical references in his public addresses, but almost never mentioned Jesus Christ directly. Many of the people of New Salem, Illinois, those who knew Lincoln longest and best, remained skeptical about his supposed Christian faith right up to the moment of his death. And because Lincoln was such a vocal anti-Christianity advocate when they knew him, who can blame them? Lincoln simply could not keep his personal convictions private – he never missed an opportunity to ridicule a preacher or to express his religious doubts (privately or publicly) to the more pious of his acquaintances. Citing an old Winston Churchill saying that, “a fanatic is one who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject,” Mansfield stresses just how obsessed Lincoln was about debunking organized religion. His resulting anti-religion reputation cost Lincoln many a vote during his political life when preachers specifically asked their congregations to vote for his political opponents.But Lincoln was a tortured soul from the beginning, and his journey would be a long one. His mother died when he was nine years old, leaving the boy in the care (if you can call it that) of a wandering, but demanding father who saw his son more as slave labor than as a member of his family. And it did not help that Mr. Lincoln was a Christian of the most hypocritical sort, helping to nip the boy’s budding faith in the bud. Through the years, Lincoln would lose others close to him, including two young sons, and would suffer from regular (and sometimes near suicidal) bouts with depression. And just when America was most severely tested, Lincoln was forced by his incompetent Generals to redefine the presidential role of Commander-in-Chief, a role for which he was not prepared. By war’s end, Lincoln had come to believe that God was playing a direct role in what was happening on the battlefield, that the country must pay a heavy price for its past sins before God would allow the killing to stop. Although his evolutionary religious journey, almost complete, was cut short by an assassin’s bullet, the man who died in Washington was far different from the one who lived in Illinois.Lincoln’s Battle with God is an eye-opener, particularly as regards Lincoln’s days in New Salem - a reminder that the real Abraham Lincoln is no less amazing a man than the mythical one.Rated at: 4.0

AMONG THE MEMORIES OF THOSE WHO LIVED THROUGH that dreadful April day so many years ago was the way the afternoon sunshine quickly descended into evening gloom. With darkness had come fog and a gentle mist that dampened the nation’s capital. A chill followed, an unwelcome surprise after the warmth of day. Then there was the moon. It appeared late on that Friday night, leaving the hours just after sunset dark and unusually dreary. It announced itself first in the silvered edges of clouds and then, unhurriedly, came fully, brightly into view. In the years after, more than one man swore that before the night was done, the moon had turned bloodred. If true, it was a fitting banner over the events unfolding below.
At the White House, the Lincolns dined together. The president and First Lady listened as their son Robert, a young officer on General Grant’s staff, excitedly described the siege of Petersburg and the magnificence of Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. The Lincolns’ other son, twelve-year-old Tad, felt slighted by the attention trained on his older brother and misbehaved to correct the injustice. It worked. Mrs. Lincoln scolded him for neglecting his meal and then, prompted by the mention of the Grants, told her husband that she had invited that lovely Clara Harris, daughter of Senator Ira Harris of New York, to accompany them to Ford’s Theatre later in the evening. Young Miss Harris had thrilled at the chance to attend the play Our American Cousin with the First Family and had assured Mrs. Lincoln that her fiancé, Major Henry R. Rathbone, would cherish the opportunity as well. It was settled, then. The Lincolns would collect the young couple at the Harris home on H Street near Fourteenth.
Lincoln answered the news with a nod, but must have winced inwardly. He knew the truth: Miss Harris and Major Rathbone were to accompany the Lincolns because the more distinguished names in Washington had refused to attend. This, Lincoln had long understood, was his wife’s fault. He genuinely loved Mary, but she was not an easy woman to abide. One of her traits in particular haunted his life: she was notoriously jealous. She screamed viciously at any woman who dared even to walk next to her husband. Many a Washington official’s wife had been humiliated in public by the enraged First Lady, who thought nothing of making loud and tearful allegations of impropriety no matter who looked on. After one such scene, General Grant’s wife swore she would never be in Mary Lincoln’s presence again. So the Grants had excused themselves from this night at the theater, as had half a dozen of the city’s eminent couples. This left the president of the United States and his First Lady to an outing with a junior officer and his date. It was galling to Lincoln, particularly on this night—when victory was in the air and the president was the toast of the Union. All of Washington knew that Mary’s antics kept her husband from the honor due him, and they marveled at Lincoln’s love for his wife.
Still, it had been a good day. After breakfast and the usual early visitors, there had been a cabinet meeting, this one attended by the victorious General Grant. As always when Lincoln’s cabinet assembled, there was fierce debate. Today, the topic was the way Confederate leaders should be treated after the war and what economic aid ought to be offered to the Southern states. Lincoln listened, commented almost absentmindedly from time to time, and then turned with eagerness to General Grant. The president was desperate to know: What had it been like at Appomattox five days before? What kind of man was General Lee, and how had he handled himself in surrendering? With each word Grant spoke, Lincoln grew increasingly peaceful, ever more satisfied. There had been so much horror, so many years. He could be forgiven for reveling in the details of the end.
After a lunch with Mary, he had endured a series of still more meetings—with Vice President Johnson, with the assistant secretary of war, and with Nancy Bushrod, a former slave. Before the day’s paperwork was done, he had pardoned a deserter who had been sentenced to death. I think the boy can do us more good above ground than underground,
he quipped.
Then came a promised carriage ride with Mary. It was a magical day. The sun’s warmth seemed to penetrate the soul while the perfume of flowers filled the nostrils and dogwood trees displayed their beauty like strutting peacocks. The Lincolns rode alone. Only their carriage driver attended them, and this rare privacy encouraged a welcome intimacy. Mrs. Lincoln commented that her husband almost startled her with his cheerfulness. He replied that it was because the war was at a close. We must both be cheerful in the future. Between the war, and the loss of our darling Willie, we have both been very miserable.
It was true, though the mention of the son lost to typhoid a few years before stung the still-grieving Mary. Fortunately, the pain did not linger. The two continued happily toward the Navy Yard, lost in imagining the future and how they would travel and learn to love life again in the years to come.
This was the mood that pervaded as the Lincolns left the White House for Ford’s Theatre at 8:05 that evening. From their carriage, they waved to well-wishers along the road in the black, wet night. They were joined by their guests at Senator Harris’s home and arrived finally at the theater sometime shortly after 8:30. The play had already begun.

It didn’t matter. When the president’s party entered the second-story viewing box reserved for them that evening, the orchestra’s conductor took note, raised his baton to interrupt the actors on stage, and signaled the start of Hail to the Chief.
The more than sixteen hundred people in the theater exploded into applause. Lincoln bowed in response, his hand over his heart, and then bowed again when those below continued their grateful cheers.
Order returned and the play resumed. Not overly interested in the happenings onstage, the Lincolns quietly continued the flirty intimacy they had kindled earlier that afternoon.
What will Miss Harris think of my hanging on to you so,
Mary asked, referring to her grip on her husband’s hand.
Why, she will think nothing about it,
he assured.
This teasing continued. Unnoticed was the figure who had just stepped through the outer door of the president’s box. The man was deliberate, even graceful in his movements. He locked the door behind him and then braced it shut with a board he had placed nearby during a visit to the theater earlier that day. Turning then to the inner door, he peered through a hole he had bored just hours before with his pocketknife. He could see what he needed to see: the back of the president’s head.
Unaware of the man and enjoying a newfound tenderness with his wife, Lincoln returned happily to the theme he and Mary had touched upon during their lovely afternoon carriage ride. In a gentle whisper, the president assured that after the war, we will not return immediately to Springfield. We will go abroad among strangers where I can rest.
The figure at the door now stepped silently into the president’s box. He paused and took stock of the mere four feet between himself and the president. Slowly, smoothly, the man pulled a .44-caliber Derringer pistol from his pocket and waited. He was listening for lines from the play on the stage below. They would signal his next move.
We will visit the Holy Land,
Lincoln continued, leaning toward Mary so as not to disturb the others.
Now, hearing what he had been waiting for in an actor’s words, the stranger—himself an actor named John Wilkes Booth—stepped forward and lifted his pistol toward the president’s head.
In the sacred seconds that remained, Lincoln spoke again—before the assassin’s shot entered his brain just inches behind the left ear, before the blood and the confusion and the manhunts and the grief, before the ages took him and the great soul left its earthly home to hover over a nation still struggling to be born. Lincoln spoke once more.
We will visit the Holy Land and see those places hallowed by the footsteps of the Savior,
the president said.
And then, nearly as the Derringer ball cracked the air, There is no place I so much desire to see as Jerusalem.
These, then, are the final, surprising words of Abraham Lincoln in this world.
Or are they? It is natural that some should doubt. The words are rarely included in accounts of Lincoln’s assassination. Schoolchildren do not learn them as they do the other facts of Lincoln’s life. Indeed, the sentiments are too religious for most teachers to dare include in their lessons. Scholars tend to exclude this episode also, usually because of a similar hesitation about religion.
It is understandable. Lincoln was, after all, a religious oddity. He never joined a church. In fact, he went through periods in his life when he was openly antireligion—even anti-God. In his later years, he spoke often of God but rarely of Jesus Christ. That he was attending a bawdy play on Good Friday—the day Christians set aside to contemplate the crucifixion of their Savior—seems perfectly consistent with the image of Lincoln that has come to us through the years. It is reasonable to doubt that he would call Christ the Savior and declare himself eager to see the Holy Land in the last moments of his life.
Surely, critics will say, to insist that these words are true or that they are any reflection of Lincoln’s faith is part of a religious reworking of his life, part of a misguided attempt by the pious to refashion him into a gleaming religious icon of some imagined national religion. Surely this is the fruit of bad research and pitiful scholarship—more myth than history.
Yet there the words are, and they are no invention. They come to us, indirectly, from the only person who could know with certainty: Mary Lincoln. Apparently, in 1882, Mrs. Lincoln reported her husband’s last utterances to Noyes W. Miner, the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Springfield, Illinois. Miner reported his conversations with Mary Lincoln in a manuscript entitled Personal Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln,
now kept at the Illinois State Historical Library. We might be suspicious of such a religiously charged remembrance retold by a clergyman were it not that respected scholarly volumes, such as the oft-consulted Recollected Words of Abraham Lincoln, include the Lincoln/Miner version of Lincoln’s final words in its pages.¹ Eminent Lincoln scholars—such as Allen C. Guelzo in Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President and Wayne Temple in Abraham Lincoln: From Skeptic to Prophet—regard the words as true.² The popular Doris Kearns Goodwin alludes to them as well in her best-selling Team of
Ford’s Theatre in the days just after Lincoln’s assassination. Note the guards at the door and the black crepe draped from the windows.
Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.³ As important, Dr. James Cornelius, curator of the Lincoln collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, Illinois, in referring to Mary Lincoln’s account of her husband’s final utterances, has said, We believe the words to be substantiated.

So what of it? Why is this important? It is simply that if Abraham Lincoln did indeed speak of a Savior and a longed-for pilgrimage in his last moments on earth, then there was likely a journey, a progression, some dawning of spiritual reality in his life. In his early years he had been nearly the village atheist. He mocked preachers, wrote against revealed religion
and carried a Bible about town only to ridicule it. His friend and law partner, William Herndon, said that Lincoln once asked him to remove the word God from a speech because Lincoln was sure no such personality ever existed.

Yet against this we have Mary’s own account of her husband’s dramatic final words, and they do not stand alone. We also have the magnificent Second Inaugural Address, perhaps the noblest American political sermon, given only weeks before the great man’s death. It, too, challenges the prevailing view of an atheistic or religiously skeptical Lincoln, and it is unquestionably the fruit of Lincoln’s mind. So almost certainly, there was a spiritual journey of some kind in Abraham Lincoln’s life, in this man who has nearly come to be regarded as the soul of America, and if so we ought to know it in order to better understand not only Lincoln but our country and even ourselves as well.
What has usually discredited such efforts in the past is that Lincoln’s religious life is seldom allowed to speak for itself. Instead, it becomes the repository of religious agendas. This began immediately after his death. That he was killed on Good Friday and at the end of a war that was as much moral crusade as any in history transformed him in memory; in fact, it transformed him by dawn of the Easter Sunday morning two days after his death. He became no longer slain president, but crucified martyr—even crucified savior. Nearly every Christian denomination has claimed him for their own, as have people of religious persuasions as varied as spiritualists, Hindus, and Jews.⁷ Each persuasion finds in Lincoln a reflection of itself; each seeks to explain his greatness as a product of its beliefs.
History cannot, should not, be treated in such a way. Those who believe in a sovereign God who rules history should be humble enough before the face of their Creator to report the past as it was, no matter how disturbing, and to always understand themselves as feeling their way along the contours of providence. To invent, to contort history into neatly packaged spiritual lessons, does disservice to the very idea of God’s sovereignty. Similarly, those who do not believe in a divine being but rather in the processes of history also have an obligation to the past. If man’s story in this world is all the truth we have, then how much heavier is our responsibility to it, how much more sacred our devotion to fact?
Perhaps more than most figures from the past, Lincoln’s life demands this fidelity to history as it was lived. He always surprises, always resists confinement to the forms and definitions imposed upon him. He lived in an age still foreign to us. He was a complicated soul, an innovative mind, and an oppressed spirit. He was raw and earthy and poetic. He could be ambitious and enraged and cold. He rose from a spare cabin to the White House, and did so in an age of titanic conflict, of near incomprehensible change. We can strive to know what we may of Lincoln. We can hope to understand. Yet never can we confine him; never can we seek to make him conform. His story, particularly the story of his faith, ought to be written with respect for these mysteries in honor of both the man and the nation he served.
This book, then, is intended to explore Lincoln’s life with Mary’s recollection of his final words in mind and with his grand Second Inaugural Address ringing in our ears. Lincoln seems to have made a religious journey of some kind. It was, perhaps, the product of a struggle, a battle—with preachers, with doctrines, with the Bible, with providence, with religious politics, perhaps even with God himself. What can we know of that battle,
