    Chapter 1: Introduction to Moneymalism

The most substantial people are the most frugal, and make the least show, and live at the least expense. —Francis Moore

I’m not a millionaire.  I’m not even close.  If you are looking for get-rich-quick schemes or you have long term plans to become a millionaire—this is not the book for you.  If this is your desire, there is no doubt in my mind that you can go to the bookstore and find hundreds of how to become a millionaire books.  In the past ten years, I have probably bought and read many of these books.  Yet, my paltry bank account totals much less than a million dollars.  Although I may not be living a luxury lifestyle like the rich and famous—I am completely debt free.

Having zero debt is something I am very proud of, yet I don’t go shouting it from the rooftops of the neighboring buildings.  I live in middle class suburbia and I grimace as I hear stories of my neighbors going through some really tough financial hardships. Many of these people are experiencing foreclosures, facing repossessions, dealing with compounding credit card debt and bill collectors calling at all hours of the day.  These are the type of situations that a large percentage of Americans are dealing with every day of every week.  I should know—I was in their shoes just over two years ago.

Not only was I in debt two years ago—I was a financial mess.  I’m not just talking about my bills; I am also talking about the clutter and disorganization that overpowered my finances.  I needed to make a change if I was ever going to escape from my economic rut.  Everything was in disarray—various bills were due at different times of the month, many of which were accruing late charges and fees.  These bills were scattered around my house.  Some lay on my desk in a pile, others were in a basket in my kitchen.  Some of my bills were delivered to my e-mail account via e-bill.  Keeping track of these bills on a monthly basis became too daunting a task and frankly I became too lazy. This laziness eventually left my bank account in shambles
