About this ebook

How do you find out about addiction? If you are a kid, you usually hear about drugs from other kids. They don’t know much, because they have just started using drugs, or haven’t used them. Parents tend to know little about what is going on at school, and what knowledge they have tends to be a generation out of date.

Addiction and drug use is actually a complicated area of knowledge. Addiction can be psychological, brain changes are absolutely biological, and drug use occurs in a certain social context. Books for teens tend to be written by novelists with variable knowledge of the topic.

No one has ever written a book like this. Dr. Johnson grew up with addicted parents. He taught at Harvard Medical School for 30 years and is now Director of Addiction Psychiatry for the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He has treated 15,000 patients during detoxification. He has treated a number of addicted patients in 4-days-per-week psychoanalysis, including while they were drinking or injecting drugs. Dr. Johnson has had extensive dealings with members of the drug culture and the recovery culture.

Widespread Zombification has 21st-century neuroscience, psychoanalysis, and social commentary packaged as a page-turner; all written at a sixth-grade reading level.

    About the Author

    Introduction

Hey kids! Zombie Masters will be hunting your brain over the next few years. You should know how to protect yourself. Parents tend to be ignorant on this topic, or shy about talking about it. You can bring this up with them or not - your call. It depends on what kind of luck you had getting parents. Some kids did OK, but many of you are saddled with some version of dismal. For a lot of kids, your parents are zombies. Mine were. Figuring your way out of that is major.

Now, how do you know what a Zombie is? A lot of the time you can't tell. You have to be shrewd. The facts in this book will help you notice things that you have been unaware of. You will find that in your school, over time, more and more of the kids there get converted. The essence of Zombiehood is that their wills have been taken over by a Master. The technology of making Zombies is improving all the time. The Masters have scientists, doctors, and engineers working to improve their evil techniques. You won't be able to tell if someone has become a Zombie by just looking. You will have to learn how to observe behavior.

This book is written for kids 12 to 17 because you are the exact group that the Masters are targeting. I want to help you know how the Masters will approach you, so you are ready when they come. A lot of the things in this book are awful to think about, and will make you uncomfortable. But if I don't tell you about the territory you will be fighting on, the Zombie Masters may get you. You will see that they count on surprise, on the ignorance of their prey, and on the mistake many kids make by trusting people who invite them to do sketchy things. I will start by giving you a list of some of the kinds of Zombies that you will be encountering over the next few years.

But first I have to ask if you believe in evil. If you believe that the world is full of well-meaning, if sometimes misguided people, you can stop reading right now. This book is not for you. Read on only if you believe that while some people can love, others are full of hate. They want to hurt you. They want money any way they can get it - even if it means ruining your brain or killing you. They are hunting you because some of their old Zombies are giving out. After a few decades Zombies get dysfunctional. Old Zombies die or get too sick to give money to their Masters. The Masters kick the body aside and hunt for fresh meat, mostly in junior and senior high schools.

    PART ONE

WIDESPREAD ZOMBIFICATION IN THE 21st CENTURY

You have probably seen horror movies or that old Michael Jackson Thriller music video. They show strange-looking humanoids lurching around. OK, some Zombies look like that. You mostly see that kind when they are in the hospital having some part chopped off or having some weird infection treated. And the original Haitian Zombies looked like that. Wade Davis, a Harvard specialist in the use of plants by native peoples, explained that form of Zombification in a book called The Serpent and the Rainbow. The original technique of making Zombies comes from Africa back in the distant mists of time.

The Master had to find a way to get drugs into the person's brain. Centuries ago the technique was to sneak the chemicals into the person's food. A living person was turned into a Zombie by application of plant powders that paralyzed the will. The victim's will was turned over to the Bokor (the Haitian word for Zombie Master) by the application of 2 chemicals. One was a substance refined from organs of the local pufferfish. That stuff made the dosed person appear dead. Other stuff from a plant, datura, made the person detached, as if in a dreamlike state where the mind could be controlled.

21st century mind control is more elegant than that. What Wade Davis did was to define the nature of Zombification. The Master needs to get chemicals into a person's brain to take over the will. The way that current Zombifying drugs work is that the Zombie has the experience of wanting to do one thing, but urgently has to do something completely different - carry out the will of the Master.

Sneaking chemicals into food is never going to make modern Zombie Masters billions of dollars. In the 21st century, Masters use techniques of buzz and beautification to get their victims to use the chemicals that allow them to take over the will. Kids volunteer to become Zombies.

How does a vampire bat suck the blood of a chicken? Does it fly up and grab the chicken by the neck? No. To a chicken a vampire bat looks like a little chick. It waddles up to the chicken, who must be dumb and not wearing her glasses. The vampire bat nuzzles the chicken in just the right way and the motherly chicken takes it under her wing. The bat cozies up to the chicken's breast. It cuts the breast open with its razor-sharp teeth, so sharp that the chicken doesn't feel the cut. Then the bat licks the blood as it drips out of the wound.

This is the style of approach the Masters use to make their Zombies today. They will invite you to try their mind-control drugs. They will let you know that only if you use their drugs will you be a sexy, popular girl or boy. This may actually happen; drug use may make some Zombies cool for a few years. Then the drugs take over the brain. Then the Masters suck out everything that the Zombies live for until they die or become too sick to buy their drugs any more. The Zombies look back in regret that they ever tried the drugs. But it is too late. They have been turned. Their brains will never be the same. They will always urgently want the chemical that the Master possesses.

Zombie Masters are the people who sell the drugs that paralyze the will. They may be gang members. They may be men who go to work in a shirt and tie every day. They may live next door to you. You think this is a fiction book? No. You live with Zombies and their Masters, but you may not be aware of their existence. I will list some of the types of Zombies that you will encounter before you finish high school, and explain some of the developments in Zombie science that have enabled the Masters to convert so many of the kids in your classes. Look around you. The Zombies are there.

    Chapter 1

    The Upper Zombie Drug Group

    Upper Zombies

The first group of Zombies use drugs that stimulate them: nicotine, cocaine, methamphetamine, and ecstasy. This is a group of drugs that Zombify as they stimulate the brain. I will tell you a little about this group, and then explain how these drugs take over the brain.

Nicotine is the addictive drug in cigarettes. You may be thinking, How could cigarettes be in the same group as cocaine? Isn't cocaine an evil drug that the government outlaws, while cigarettes can be bought everywhere? If you think this, then you are not really believing that there is evil in the world. Either you have to stop reading, or you have to think, Well of course, the Zombie Masters buy the government leaders, and the leaders make it possible for the Masters to make Cigarette Zombies. If you really think hard, you may realize that, because nicotine comes from tobacco plants grown in the U.S., the American government will work hard on behalf of the Zombie Masters here, and help the Zombie Masters transport this drug to other countries.

What is in it for the government? Money. The Masters pay individuals from the government, and they give the government a kickback on their sales, a tax. Then everybody is happy. The money comes from the Zombies, is collected by the Masters, and then spread to all the people whom the Masters need to buy off in order to stay in business. The Masters make deals with people in government, from police to the President of the United States.

Nicotine kills 19% of all Americans. Cocaine kills too, but not many. The difference is in the buzz, the hype, the advertising, the beautification of the drug.

Since cocaine comes from coca plants that are grown outside the U.S., the government will outlaw that kind of Zombie drug here. When we look at the wars of the Masters, you will see that the Zombie Masters in each country want to convert as many people as possible into Zombies with their own drugs, while limiting the sales made by other Zombie Masters with other drugs. Some of their wars are about market share. They use governments to help build market share so that the Zombies will buy the local Master's drug, and not what the foreign competitor is selling.

    Cigarette Zombies

Nicotine comes from the tobacco plant. Before 1492, American locals used tobacco for fun. But as far as we know, tobacco was not used by Native Americans to make Zombies. Conquering Europeans recognized the ability of the drug to turn people into Zombies and by 1670 half of all men in England used their drug every day.

Then the market reached a limit, due to the lack of effective methods of drug delivery, and to the difficulty the Masters had in recruiting woman Zombies. Part of the system of beautification back then said that tobacco was a high-status drug, and that women did not have the status to use it. The Masters' lack of awareness of how to use psychological tricks on girls was not repaired for 200 years.

Back then Zombies used ineffective means of getting the drug into their brains, such as chewing the tobacco, smoking pipes and cigars, or sniffing it (snuff). But around 1900, nicotine technology got going. The Masters learned how to use machines to make cigarettes. Before 1900 the Masters had already made huge fortunes. Much of the American institution of slavery was built on the tobacco growers in the American South who needed slaves to grow tobacco to make Zombies. But Zombies were not as widespread or as well
