Preface
The gems have a remarkable world of their own. In the market we can see many different gems in many different colours and shapes and people get attracted to them. Many people wear them just to look gorgeous while the others wear the gems through the consultancy of the astrologer. The gems kept in the showcases in the showrooms look simple to the common man but they have a remarkable world of their own which only the gemmologists enjoy.
One Gem stone in reality is a piece of a mineral. It is either a piece of a mineral or non organic or non carbonic substance. After cutting and polishing the Gem stone is used for making precious stones and other adornments. However certain Gems like lapis, amber, pearls etc are not minerals but yet they are used for the manufacturing of jewellery, these are called as organic or carbonic Gem stones. Gem stones are both hard and soft. The lustre, rarity and other physical properties, accordingly creates the value of the Gem stones. In general, people have knowledge of only nine Gem stones, but in reality in this world there are more than 2000 varieties of Gem stones.
Usually Gem stones are classified as precious or semi precious stones, but technically they are classified as natural, synthetic and treated Gem stones. Gem stones after extracting from the mines are then cut, polished, carved and scratched out, after this cycle it is sold in the market. The stones that are found naturally are called ‘Natural Gem Stones.’ Every gem stone has its chemical composition. Some gemstones are not extracted but they are manufactured to imitate the natural gemstones. Such manufactured gemstones are known as ‘synthetic gemstones.’ The synthetic gemstones possess the colour and the look of the natural gemstone but they do not possess their chemical composition and physical characteristics. Other than these two varieties, natural gemstones a times are given some treatment, such stones are called, ‘treated stones.’ These treated stones are natural but some disturbances are created to them.
In natural stones cracks are found, in these cracks oil is filled. If the gem is coloured than coloured oil is filled and if the gem is transparent then colourless oil is filled. With this oiling; the beauty of the gemstone increases along with its value. It’s true that this oil does not remain in the stone for a longer period. The gem stone is used by the customer in finger rings or other jeweller, due to its regular use, the oil used in the gemstone oozes out, thereby the lustre and the colour of the stone becomes faded making its cracks visible. It’s ridiculous to note that seeing these cracks superstitious comments that, The cracks are the signs indicating about the problems that were to come upon you but has been obstacle by the stone.
Certain gemstones are heated by which their beauty increases and so does the impurities in them are reduced. Such gemstones are called, ‘heat treated gemstones.’ This treatment is usually done on ruby and sapphire. Similar to heat treatment some gemstones are radiated and made beautiful, such gemstones are called radiated gemstones. This treatment is done in Topaz.
