PROLOGUE
My yellow Labrador Retriever Bayfield and I are on one of our Wisconsin odysseys this long September weekend. I am in a pensive, contemplative mood on this gray, rainy day. The dull, overcast sky and gentle rain have a way of quieting me down, as though the heavens are saying, just rest.
A good day to hunker in as I begin this book.
I pour myself a cup of my favorite Organic Wilderness Retreat coffee, light my balsam fir candle and head to the loft to write. I open the shades to the expanse of the lake, and let the soft light stream in. While my computer boots up, I sit in a wooden rocker my aunt Jean gave me many years ago at a time of unsettling transition in my life. She was a great lady, stately I would say. I spent many of my early years at the corner grocery store she owned with my uncle Hank, located across the street from a playground. Who could have crafted a more blissful childhood than that? A neighborhood grocery store complete with the best selection of candy and ice cream and a playground where my spirit could run free. A loving extended family complete with my two cousins, Steve and Gary, who were like older brothers to me. I think about my aunt Jean now and one of the great lessons I learned from her. She always trusted me and in doing so, taught me how to trust others. I am grateful for her positive influence in my life.
I sit at my computer and momentarily reflect back to the publishing of Reflections from the Red Kayak: Thoughts on Life in 2010. By the encouraging response of my readers, I am inspired to continue my writing. The book touches people in many unexpected ways and helps others paddle on
their own journeys. It is from this humble place of sharing that I write this next book.
The story really begins in April of 2010. I attended one of Joan Anderson’s Weekend to Change Your Life
retreats on Whidbey Island off the coast of Washington State. Joan is an internationally renowned author and I had read all of her books. Her messages and insights totally resonated with me.
I was at a time of significant ‘change thrust upon me’, as Joan would say, having suffered through three significant losses in my life in a very short period of time. My life was turned upside down and in working through the circular, unpredictable cycles of grief, I was exhausted. I longed to retreat. I needed a place unfamiliar, a place with no memories and no agenda. I ached for an open space to simply be,
and take a small step for myself to begin the process of rearranging the scattered puzzle pieces of my life. At the retreat, I promised myself to just stay open to the experience.
Among all the majesty of the landscape of Whidbey, the simple gnarly tree pictured at the opening of this prologue captured me. Amidst all its imperfections, beautiful flowers blossomed on its twisted branches. In this tree I saw a true snapshot of my life. It helped me realize that within the tangled knots of my sorrow and confusion, healing and peacefulness would find
