What is a Dolphin?
Dolphins are mammals that live in the ocean. They have smooth, gray skin. Their skin feels like rubber.
The dolphin's mouth is filled with rows and rows of sharp teeth. They are made for tearing off pieces of meat.
Dolphins come in different colors. Most of them are gray, but there are also dolphins that are black and white. There are even some that are all white.
Some dolphins have long, skinny noses. Some have much shorter noses. There are even some, like the beluga, who have almost no nose at all.
Dolphins don't have gills. They breathe air just like humans. That means that they can't stay under water for too long or they will drown.
Dolphins are really part of the whale family. They also have two names. Dolphins are also called porpoises.
Like whales, dolphins have a blow hole on the top of their heads. They use this hole to breathe out after a long dive. Sometimes there is water in the blow hole. Then they make a spout, just like a whale does. A dolphin can blow air out its blow hole at over 100 miles (160 kilometres) an hour!
It takes less than a fifth of a second for a dolphin to breathe out and in. That's almost as fast as you can blink!
Scientists don't know how deep dolphins can dive. They have tested some dolphins and found out that they can go at least 1,500 feet (457 metres) deep. Some dolphins might go deeper.
When they go that deep, their lungs collapse. In fact, the water is so heavy it completely squishes them. If humans went that deep, their bones would be crushed.
Scientists don't know how many different kinds of dolphins there are. They think there are about 50 kinds.
Most people are used to seeing the bottle-nose dolphin. The bottle-nose dolphin has a medium sized nose. Their mouth turns up at the ends. It makes it look like they are always smiling.
Dolphins have good eyesight. They can see as well out of the water as they can under the water. But a lot of times dolphins don't see things with their eyes.
Dolphins have something called sonar. They make sounds by moving air around inside their heads. The sounds come out and bounce off things in the water. Then the sounds bounce back to the dolphin.
The dolphins hear the sounds and it gives them a picture of what is in the water ahead of them. If you blindfold a dolphin, it can still swim around things in a tank, just as if it could see them.
Dolphins don't hear the sounds with their ears. They don't have any ears on the outside of their head. Instead, they hear the sound through a thin window
in their jaw. Many of these sounds are so high pitched that humans cannot hear them.
Dolphins can also make sounds we can hear. They can make clicks and squeals. Dolphins like to make these sounds a lot. Sometimes they never shut up!
Dolphins like to play tricks. They'll play tricks on other dolphins, and on people.
Dolphins are smart. One trainer used to give her dolphins a fish if they brought trash from their tank. It would help to clean up the tank.
One day the trainer saw that she was giving
