INTRODUCTION
Most of the wisdom I have gained in my life has come out of incredible emotional pain, counseling or the rooms. I spent years of drug abuse and heavy drinking attempting to numb my emotional pain. I know how to overspend and how to overeat. There were times I had a death wish. I would attempt to find the line of sanity, cross over it and experience that space and then come back across to what I thought at the time was sanity. It was all insanity! I didn’t know anything about 12 step programs. In my incredibly limited understanding AA was a bunch of old men smoking heavily in a small room somewhere. I had never heard of NA which is where my drugs of choice lie! In my twenties, I heard about a meeting at the hospital for people who had alcoholic family members. It was called ACOA - Adult Children of Alcoholics. I went a few times. It triggered a lot of unhealed wounds. Denial screamed at me that my dad wasn’t an alcoholic he just drank a lot. I had repressed the abuse in my life: emotional, physical and sexual. I had so much rage I once told my therapist that if we tapped my rage the walls would fall down in her office.
How prophetic!
I didn’t have a name for the family dynamics. We just tried to keep everything together looking as normal
as possible in insane conditions. No stress there! I had no clue how much of an addict I was personally. It didn’t seem to me to be a problem to be high everyday from the time I woke up to the time I passed out at night. I’d smoke a bowl before I even got out of bed. I mixed drugs and alcohol to poisonous levels daily. I could out party
anyone. You name it. I was using it.
I met a woman in Boca Raton, Florida who was in the program and she took me to meetings. My denial and fear were too great to be aware of just how dysfunctional I was. She loved me enough to offer the gift the rooms could share with me. My ego and my fear were too big to accept it.
Twenty five years later I met a woman who was serious about her recovery. I loved her greatly and still do. She taught me many lessons in recovery, in patience, forgiveness and compassion. She was one of my greatest teachers. You know who you are, so when this book gets in your hands, please know I adore you and I wish you only the best life has to offer you. Thank you so much!
I have spent plenty of time in counseling and in the rooms over my life. It has changed my life. I hope that you will use this book for your own healing. That was my intention in writing it. If you are reading this now, KNOW THIS: This is not a coincidence. You are ready for what is inside if you just trust the process. The Universe, also known as your Higher Power, God, Source Energy, our Creator...you can name it whatever you are comfortable with - has gotten you to this book to help facilitate your growth and to love yourself more. Use it to help yourself heal! Read it throughout the year and keep it. It doesn’t have an annual date so it can be used quite a long time. You are in the right place, reading the right information for your healing journey. You are an eternal spiritual being having a human experience. This is not home. Blessings and Light to your now and forever!
PRAYERS
The Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at the time and enjoying one moment at a time.
St. Francis Prayer
God, make me a channel of your peace, so that where there is hatred, I may bring love; that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; that where there is discord, I may bring harmony; that where there is error, I may bring truth; that where there is doubt, I may bring faith; that where there is despair, I may bring hope; that where there are shadows, I may bring light; that where there is sadness, I may bring joy. God, grant that I may seek to comfort rather than to be comforted; to understand, rather than to be understood; to love, rather than to be loved. For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy name
Thy kingdom come Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For Thine is the kingdom and power and glory
Forever and ever, Amen.
PRAYERS FOR 12 STEPS
1st Step Prayer
Creator God, I can now admit that I am powerless over my addiction. I know my life is unmanageable. I try to control it and chaos happens. Help me to understand the true meaning of getting and staying clean. Please help me heal myself.
2nd Step Prayer
Source of All, I can no longer live the way I have been living. It is not working. I need help. Please help me to restore my sanity. I humbly ask you to remove all thoughts that cause me to want to use. Heal my wounded spirit. Restore my mind. Remove from me all addiction cravings and self loathing behaviors.
3rd Step Prayer
Father - Mother God, I offer myself to your Healing Spirit to restore me. I want to feel connected to You. Teach me Your ways so that I can be a loving healthy person. I ask that You teach me how to live in Your will. Teach me how to handle my challenges differently so I can grow in trust and love with Your healing Spirit
4th Step Prayer
Dear God, I pray for the strength to complete my searching and fearless moral inventory. I have messed up royally. I need help to make the changes I need to make. Give me strength to do this step. Facing all my mistakes is uncomfortable. I am going to write it all down and face it finally.
5th Step Prayer
God of All there is, I got through the fourth step! Thank you! Now I have to admit my mistakes and wrong action to others. This is going to be embarrassing. Please be with me while I do this because I am afraid of all the feelings that are stirred up now. I am trying hard to work this program but I do get afraid a lot. Let me know somehow that you are with me.
6th Step Prayer
Healer of us all, I need Your help in my defects of character. I see I have a bunch of them. It is overwhelming! I understand that they are obstacles to my recovery. Help me to continue being honest with myself. Help me to stay humble so I can learn from this effort. Guide me to spiritual awareness.
7th Step Prayer
Higher Power, I am willing to trust you more. I am asking that you now remove from me every single defect of character I have. I am sorry there are so many. I can’t do it without your help. Please give me wisdom so that I can find strength deep within me!
8th Step Prayer
Dear God, Help me make my list of all those I have harmed. I am responsible for my mistakes. Thanks for all you are doing that is making my life so much better. Give me the willingness to begin the process of my restitution.
9th Step Prayer
Hello God, I am asking You to help guide me with the right attitude to make my amends being aware not to harm others in the process. I ask for Your guidance in making indirect amends. I have harmed a lot of people. I feel really bad about it. Help me to forgive myself. Help others to forgive me. Thanks.
10th Step Prayer
Sacred Energy Source, Thanks for loving me! Please help me to grow in understanding of myself and others. Help me learn all the things the program is telling me I need to learn to do. Help me to be conscious to correct mistakes when I make them and to take responsibility for my actions. Help me to change my negative & self-defeating attitudes and behaviors to an abundance mentality. Help me to make the changes I need to make when I need to make them. Thanks.
11th Step Prayer
God, help me to keep my connection to You open and clear. Show me the way when I don’t know it. Help me deal with self will, rationalization & wishful thinking. When I feel connected to you I feel stronger and more confident. Thanks for that. I need to learn how to do it Your way and not mine. You saw where my best thinking got me! Thanks again for your presence in my life.
12th Step Prayer
Sacred Spirit, thank you that my spiritual awakening continues. I am grateful for all the help you have given me! I ask that you give me inner strength & wisdom to practice the principles of my program in all I do and say. I am going to keep working on me with Your help. Guide my path in love and light.
THE AA PROMISES
1. If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through.
2. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.
3. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.
4. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.
5. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.
6. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.
7. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.
8. Self-seeking will slip away.
9. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.
10. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.
11. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.
12. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.
Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us -- sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.
Alcoholics Anonymous pages 83-84.
THE TWELVE STEPS OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS
1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
