About this ebook
The journey to completing my first ten Toastmaster speeches and becoming a Competent Communicator was a thrilling one. The excitement and fear I experienced when getting up in front of the Airdrie Discovery Toastmasters group is something I will always clearly remember. I learned a great deal about the art of public speaking as well as a tremendous amount about myself. Come along with me as I detail my first ten speeches, a few table topic sessions, a joke of the day, and speech number one from the Speaking to Inform manual.

Speech #1 - Speaking to Inform manual
Speech 1: Toby the Toastmaster
I have led what I consider a life filled with blessings. While my parents are both from small towns in Saskatchewan, Canada, my father was in the oil patch so I was born in a small town in the middle of Africa. I spent the next 17 years overseas, mainly in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.
We moved to the U.S. state of Alabama when I was 17 and I stayed there even after the rest of my family left. I was there for half of my university life and finished my degree at the University of Calgary. I have now lived in Alberta for almost 20 years.
One part of my identity is that I have always been a stutterer. By the time I started grade one, I could barely say two words without stuttering. As a result, I rarely talked and was labelled early on as a shy child.
