About this ebook

Wolves is the fourth and final volume of the Raised By Wolves series. This ia an epic gay historical romance - in the classic sense - told in four parts and set in the Caribbean during the infamous buccaneer period of the late 1660’s. This is not a series, per se, but one very long novel divided into four volumes. Each book can be read separately, but it is highly suggested that one starts at the beginning. The story chronicles the pivotal years of the life of duelist and dilettante, John Williams, Viscount of Marsdale, aka Will among the Brethren of the Coast, and his relationship with madman and physician, Gaston the Ghoul, once known as Gabriel Sable, the Comte de Montren.

Raised by Wolves is the story of a man who embarks on a voyage of self-discovery revolving around his committed relationship to a man far more troubled than he is. This love provides the catalyst for Will to mature, confront the demons of his youth, understand true love, define his spirituality, and determine what kind of legacy he will leave in the world. Raised by Wolves is a character-driven chronicle written in the first person; and it contains psychology, philosophy, gay issues, history, graphic violence, graphic sex, people struggling with the issues of rape and child abuse, colorful and complex secondary characters, a twisting plot involving hidden motives, and lots and lots of romance expressed and defined by the main characters actually talking to one another.

Author

W. A. Hoffman

W.A Hoffman, aka Wynette Hoffman, started her own publishing company, Alien Perspective, to publish her books in 2001. Her first novel is Blood Is Thicker Than Water, a vampire/adventure novel. This was followed by Love & Benjamins, an espionage/adventure novel, and then the gay historical Raised By Wolves series: Brethren, Matelots, Treasure and Wolves. Since she enjoys the flow of the English language and does not believe in cramming her thoughts into 144 character boxes, Wynette chooses to engage in her primary communication with her readers via her web site, www.alienperspective.com. Please visit it for info on the Raised By Wolves series and her current project, Apes' Enigma. At www.alienperspective.com you will find sample chapters, a Q&A about why she wrote the series, an essay on whether or not the buccaneers were actually gay, maps included in the hardcopies of the novels, and a breakdown of what resources she found useful for studying the period.

I wasn't sure what this final installment would bring. I had thought I could guess some of what might but I found I was wrong. At first I was a little disappointed because what I had wished for had not come to pass but then when I really took in what had happened, it seems so right that the other seems wrong. I didn't want this series to ever end and I dreaded reaching the last few chapters but Hoffman did a superb job of bringing the story of Will and Gaston to a close. Now I feel inspired to write of them or draw of them; anything to keep them in my heart. Hoffman has asked that no fan art or fan writing be distributed so I can only hope and wait to see if she will write another series. I don't even mind if it is not about Will and Gaston or their children or any of the other characters. I would read anything she writes. She has proven that she can make me love her characters. I own the first book and as soon as I am able I will be sure to purchase the other three. I will be honored to have them on my bookshelves. I am sure I will be reading them again in a few years. Highly, highly recommended.

“Wolves” is a brilliant, worthy conclusion to a glorious epic! Hoffman has been very faithful to historical accuracy and realism since book one, and I worried that such adherence could preclude a happily ever after. Thankfully, this final volume delivered on all fronts – I could not be more satisfied. That is not to say the men did not face significant challenges, including the demons from their past. Nor did they escape completely unscathed. When Will is kidnapped early on, those were some of the most difficult passages I have ever read. I was emotionally shaken for him, and for all the characters I have come to love. Indeed, nearly every one of any consequence returns at some point and is resolved in some manner. The book was packed with suspense, action, adventure and romance – all the things which have made this series a must-read. I could not put it down, and read it in two days despite the 600+ pages. And even then I wanted more! Where this stands out just a bit from the previous three installments is just how deep into the minds of our two heroes readers get to journey. Will and Gaston literally come alive off the pages. Though some characters did not end at all how I anticipated (there were many surprises which made the book that much better), the resolutions fit the story and fit history. And most importantly of all, Will and Gaston remained true. This is the best historical fiction I have ever read. Overall, I cannot recommend this series enough, and I hope that someday, the author may grant us another visit with Will and Gaston…or their children. In any case, I will not hesitate to buy the author’s next book – whatever it may be.
