()
About this ebook
"I ask you to listen,
not just with your minds.
I ask you to listen with your hearts,
because that's the only way
you can receive what it is,
what we are giving.
These are the teachings of our hearts."
- Frank Decontie, Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg

I've been an independent writer since 1975 when I graduated from journalism school at Boston University. Since then I've been happily involved with my life's work writing, and consulting. Over the years I've authored hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles, blog posts, and over a dozen nonfiction books. It's my honor to have served as the author of an epic, nonfiction saga of contemporary America, Odyssey of the 8th Fire. It's freely available online at www.8thfire.net Odyssey of the 8th Fire is the true, epic saga of a historic pilgrimage for the earth across North America by people of all colors and faiths under the Sky Sign of the Whirling Rainbow. The 8th Fire arises from the deepest roots of our land. In it, circles upon circles, elders make a great and generous giveaway of the teachings they carry. The titles I have listed on Smashwords arise out of the Soul*Sparks publishing venture in which I partner with my wife, Elizabeth Wolf.As of 2019, I'm designating Chiron Communications, my umbrella publishing venture, as the publisher for the book I've recently finished writing, "Deep Agroecology: Farms, Food, and Our Future." The eBook version will be available here on Smashwords.Peace and good cheer, Steven

This Soul*Sparks small treasure is created and licensed for general consideration and contemplation. I offer it in the spirit of reciprocity as the result of my experience and my labor. Ultimately the words on these pages belong to the people who spoke them. Those elders—living and in spirit—wanted people to hear and to understand their messages. This small book is intended to help make some key native knowings—as grasped by this compiler—readily accessible through our era of transition.
Acknowledgements
A great many people have earned my appreciation and my thanks for their influence and help. All honored. Thank you also to the talented photographers of pixabay.com. I thank in particular my Muse and partner in life, Elizabeth Wolf.
I thank also fellow pilgrim Bill Watkinson who helped me get my feet on the trail many years ago, and all of the many learned elders it has been my good fortune to encounter. Great thanks also to the elders of eras past, whose enduring messages are woven into this small treasure, entwined in chorus with the voices of contemporary elders that they all may be remembered.
Tobacco and honor songs for all, I offer in respect and appreciation. — S.M.
SOULSPARKIntroduction
It has been my work in life to write about the Earth through reporting on farms and farmers, conversing with many pioneers of clean, uplifting agriculture, and also to visit with indigenous spiritual elders, paying respectful attention. I’ve listened with care to try to understand the teachings they all have offered about the Earth and about the era of transition in which we live. Native Knowings is part of my efforts as an independent journalist to pass along some of those understandings.
This modest Soul*Sparks volume cannot hope to encompass the many levels and depths of understanding that are part of indigenous traditions. But it can point toward them, and it can do so in a manner appropriate for our raucous era. Some things—core spiritual truths such as honesty, caring, sharing, respect, and beauty—remain constant as a focus for our aspirations through all phases and cycles of human and world development. Eternal virtues. Those virtues lie at the heart of these native knowings.
My aim as compiler has been to offer in context what has touched me as a quintessence of both ancient and contemporary native knowings in a coherent, and rhetorically strengthening manner. The state of the world, in my view, calls for the very best we human beings can enact. Thus I feel called to share what I can comprehend, and to make it readily and reasonably accessible as we confront mounting environmental and social crises in North America and around the world.
Indisputably, big changes are underway. My hope is that this small volume will in some ways help human beings
