I fell in love with Italy while watching the movie La Strada in the basement of my university library. Since then I have met and married an Italian, written and edited several guides and enjoyed a lot of pasta, wine and gelato. I live with my family on the outskirts of Rome and cultivate my passion for Italy a little more everyday. Moon Rome, Florence & Venice is my latest book and a result of months of exploration. I look forward to sharing what I have discovered and meeting travelers in Rome to swap stories over a cappuccino.

    FOREWORD

Puglia is the best kept secret in Italy. Unlike its more illustrious neighbors to the north Puglia attracts far fewer visitors than you would expect from a region that has it all. That all includes the longest coastline in Italy, an abundance of historic towns and villages, delicious local cusine and many sites you can’t see anywhere else. If you’ve already been to Italy or even if this is your first time Puglia offers a unique experience many travelers miss.

The reason Puglia may not be getting the attention is deserves is distance. It’s a long way from Rome, Florence, and the classic destinations tourists often associate with Italy. Puglia on the other hand offers an opportunity to discover a lesser-known side of the country that is equally rewarding and unforgettable. All it takes is an extra half-day to arrive from Rome by road or rail or even less if you fly into Brindisi. However you arrive once you start exploring Puglia you won’t want to leave.

    Enjoy the journey!

    INTRODUCING PUGLIA

Puglia has tempted travelers since the Greeks spotted the rocky coast and decided to plant their civilization in these parts. The region marks a point between East and West where cultures have ebbed and flowed for centuries. You’ll hear it in the accents and taste it in the food. It’s not your average southern outpost. Puglia is well heeled and well off compared to its neighbors.

The plains and rolling hills that run parallel to the sea are covered in olive groves and vines and it tops the list in extra-virgin production. But this is also where they manufacture fuselages for Boeing Dreamliners and locals are as interested in the future as the past. Visitors are attracted by the long coast, trulli houses, and surplus of castles that protect nearly every seaside town.

Here it’s possible to watch the sunrise over the Adriatic and see it set on the Ionian Sea. In between are Baroque masterpieces like Lecce, blessed with soft, local limestone that has given sculptors and architects new artistic possibilities, and the fishing villages of Otranto and Gallipoli which have remained faithful to their origins and provide an opportunity to step into a Byzantine and Norman past.

The exchange of culture is especially
