Clearly, she's obsessed with food and words.  Like the characters in her USA Bestseller River Valley Series, she hails from a little town in southern Oregon. Despite the fact she's lived in Seattle for almost thirty years, she will always feel like a small town girl. She's risen up the charts on all the major ebook retailers starting in 2012 when her debut novel Riversong became a bestseller. Since then, she's released almost 20 novels and novellas. She loves music and dancing, books and bubble baths, cooking and wine, movies and snuggling. She cries at sappy commercials and thinks kissing in the rain should be done whenever possible. Although she tries to act like a lady, there may or may not have been a few times in the last several years when she’s gotten slightly carried away watching the Seattle Seahawks play, but that could also just be a nasty rumor. She currently lives in a suburb of Seattle, Washington with her husband, the hero of her own love story, and their Brady Bunch clan of two sons, two daughters and five cats. Lee Johnson nee Tucker couldn’t have found herself in a worse place. Her husband just committed suicide leaving her to face a ruined business, a heap of debt and a loan shark. Oh and did I mention the unplanned pregnancy? A practical woman, who came out of the backwoods of rural Oregon to entrepreneurship in big city Seattle, she knows what she has to do. Get off the radar, buy some time and somehow raise the money to pay the debt. This means returning to River Valley, a town which holds few happy memories. There’s a piece of property there with her name on it, the legacy of the depressed, drunken mother who raised Lee alone. Lee’s entrepreneurial spirit lands her a position as a consultant to a local businessman, who wants to bring his restaurant up to city standards to attract tourists. The establishment, ‘Riversong’, becomes a metaphor for Lee’s life. How she makes peace with her past, discovers her true identity and builds up her life again, while helping others to do the same, makes compulsive reading. It’s a story of hope, of renewal, of second chances and the fact that God and life and love can be found in the murmur of a river….. There’s a strong message here. Small towns and communities are not dead places, but teeming with life and potential, providing an attractive alternative to the urban jungles which cities have become. The prose is simple, yet laden with gems of meaning. I felt a buzz while reading this one and yes, I would read it again. Favorite Quote: This morning I sat on my deck and listened to the sound of the river, which I’ve come to think of as alive, because it’s ever changing, like us. This time of year the water’s still pretty high and, if you listen carefully, you can hear the current moving towards the ocean, the sound almost imperceptible because it’s so quiet – a low steady drone punctuated with burbles over rocks and the gush of the mild rapids just down from my swimming hole. The sun was warm on my back and I sipped an expresso I had made for myself with a smidge of half-and-half, just the way I like it. I felt abundant and at peace and grateful – this surge of wholeness that I know is God.

      Lee Tucker is a woman who has never had it easy, and never taken anything for granted. Even as a girl, she struggled with serious life issues, without parental support. As soon as she is able, she leaves her past behind for a new life in a new place.Years later, just as she thinks she has found happiness as an adult, tragedy hits her again. Her husband, overwhelmed by debt he kept hidden from her, and running from loan sharks, commits suicide. Dealing with the loss and the debt he left in his wake, Lee also realizes that she is pregnant. She has no choice; Lee is forced to return to her childhood home. Her negligent mother has since passed away, leaving behind a legacy of sorrow and a house in ruins. All Lee has is that house. She must go back to where she started, to the town she never felt comfortable in. In a strange twist, it is the place she left behind that now offers a new start. Pulling herself together again, survivor that she is, Lee throws herself into making the restaurant named Riversong, and herself, a success.Tess Hardwick has written a very entertaining novel. It is full of lovable small town folk, friendship and love, renewal, hope, and a heroine you can believe in.
