    Introduction

    Across the world ceremonies and rituals are used to mark the more important events in our lives. A wedding ceremony is a perfect example of the celebration of one of those occasions. In the vast panorama of human cultural diversity, the joining of two people in marriage is steeped in tradition, symbolism and formality, in both ancient and modern rituals.

    More and more frequently, modern couples are declining the usual offerings of wedding planners and celebrants, and choosing to include rituals and traditions which bring meaningful significance to their wedding ceremony. Celebrants and officiants are under far greater pressure than ever, to be familiar with the use of many different rituals and traditions and to be willing to take part and engage in them as part of the ceremonies they perform.

    Many cultures still actively practise ancient traditions, often adapted to suit a more modern environment, but still holding the same meaning and importance to those who embrace them. While we may have somewhat moved away from some of the more outlandish rituals and customs, many couples are choosing these modern adaptations of age old rituals and it has become very ‘trendy’ to incorporate more of the beautiful and meaningful elements into today’s wedding ceremony. Through the use of their own personalised wording many are creating their own versions that not only carry significance and meaning, but really reflect who the couple are, as individuals coming together.
