Sadie, The Goat Lady
Author

Barbara Dumas Ballew

After doing research on my family history for more than twenty years, I knew I had a story. I wrote and published my first novel, "George's Creek to Georgia", about my ancestors from 1790 until 1880. Since then, I have penned an additional nine books, four are chapter books for young readers. One of them, "Little Man: A Little Girl's Dream", is being used in reading classes and the libraries in the Mesquite, TX, elementary schools. I love writing!! It brings back so many memories of things from my past, and since my husband is retired, I can spend full time on it. I do business with Createspace.com which is a POD subsidiary of Amazon. It gives me so much more control over my work and my pricing. I can publish within a month after completion and my previous publisher could only do one book per year. I hope you like my style. It seems to fit my time periods nicely.

    Sadie, the Goat Lady

    Chapter One

In the piney woods of East Texas, there lived a most interesting character. Until Winifred Merriman was older, she never realized just how wonderful and unique this friend and lady really was.

When Winnie was very young, she always thought of their neighbors, the Trotters, as being old. That certainly was from her lack of knowledge and judgment that were related to her own very young age. Now that Winnie is older, she realized that Sadie Trotter was only in her upper twenties when this story first began.

The Trotters owned a large farm just down the road and adjoining the Merriman’s land. Miss Sadie lived with her mother and father, and their farm had been passed down through generations. It had seen much better days.

Winnie’s father, Jacob Merriman, was the veterinarian in Honey Brook. Jake had met his wife, Gwyn, while they were studying at the University. They were both from Honey Brook and they loved their hometown so much they decided it would be a nice place to raise their family. After Jacob graduated with his veterinarian degree, that’s where they built their home.

Jake’s family had deeded him and Gwyn a few acres of land for their wedding present. Jake had built an office, a small barn, and several pens on their land. Then they built a lovely home on the property. It certainly provided a pleasant atmosphere to raise their son, Tim, and their little daughter, Winifred.

The Merrimans didn’t farm the acreage, but they had plenty of room for a nice garden and a small orchard. In addition, a large pond with a few ducks swimming lazily about added to the charm of the property.

Jake had a talented handyman named Harvey who they affectionately called ‘Harv’. He worked around the yards and garden and also helped at the veterinarian barn and pens when needed. There always seemed to be plenty of work to keep him busy.

Tim and Winnie loved Harv. He took time to fish with them in the pond, and in the summertime, they worked with him in the garden and orchard. He taught them to appreciate the soil and how to grow things.

Early one morning, the Merriman’s telephone rang just as the family was finishing breakfast. Jake answered the phone on the desk in the kitchen.

Hello―oh, Sadie it’s you. Is anything wrong?

Jake paused as he listened to the lady on the other end of the line.

One of my nanny goats gave birth early this morning. She’s not doing well. Can you come have a look?

    I’ll come right away.

Jake hung the phone up. It was Sadie Trotter on the phone. One of her nanny goats just had a baby and she wants me to have a look at them. The nanny’s not doing very well. Would you two like to go with me and see the baby?

It was Saturday morning in the spring and a perfect time for the children to go since there was no school that morning. Tim and Winnie jumped up from the table and were ready to go with their dad in an instant. Tim took the last sip from his glass of juice and they were ready to head for the pickup.

Get in the truck and we’ll go up by the office to get the things I might need to help the nanny.

Jake hurriedly got his bag and a few supplies and headed for the Trotter’s farm. It was not far, and they arrived very quickly. He drove right up to the big, old, red barn and found Sadie there with the goats.

The nanny was in serious trouble. The new mother was lying on her side and barely breathing. Sadie had the baby goat in her lap and was encouraging the new born to take its first feeding from a large bottle with a nipple on the end.

The baby caught Winnie’s eye immediately. She went over and knelt by Miss Sadie and began to pet and talk soothingly to the new goat.

Miss Sadie, would you squeeze some milk on my finger?

The little girl held her index finger out and Sadie let the warm milk drip onto it. Winnie then placed her finger in front of the baby’s nose and it reached out with a diminutive pink tongue and licked the milk off of the child’s finger.

"Well I’ll be. Thank you, I wasn’t thinking clearly and I needed your help, didn’t I? Would you like to sit here
