Chapter 1
The northern wind whistled loudly as it blew across the desolate tundra towards a tiny village that was almost hidden under a pristine white blanket of snow. Each year, in exactly the same location, at exactly the same time, the cheerful hamlet magically appeared. The gingerbread-like houses with candle lit rooms, gently sloping roofs and brightly painted shutters, looked cheerfully inviting, especially with the large merrily lit evergreen tree which had been placed right in the middle of the courtyard. Although there appeared to be no one in sight, an onlooker couldn’t help but notice the eight sets of hoof prints embedded in the deep snow, and far past the houses on the outermost edge of the square, a lone red and white striped pole with a sign, which stood solidly braced against the storm. The sign written in bold red letters simply said, when one got close enough to read it: North Pole.
Elmer, a fairy elf with large pointed ears and sparkly silver-grey wings, glanced outside at the blowing snowflakes hitting the classroom window pane, and then turned to listen to his teacher, Miss Holly. She was explaining the two most important rules.
Absolutely no human contact, and never, ever let the children see you at the window.
Elmer sighed. He knew he would have to practice hard at becoming invisible. This was his very first Christmas assignment, and he was nervous because sometimes when he snapped his fingers, he didn’t disappear. Leaning over he whispered to his friend Ivy. Will you help me practice again tonight?
Of course I will Elmer. You just have to relax, and you’ll get it,
said Ivy with a smile. Ivy was beautiful. She was five inches tall, one inch shorter than Elmer, and had curly, flaming, red hair that seemed to dance around her perfectly pointed ears. Her wings were snow white, flawlessly shaped, and shimmered delightfully in the moonlight.
Elmer couldn’t understand why she liked him. His brown hair stood on end, no matter how many times he combed it, his ears were too big, and his wings had a slightly greyish hue.
Now remember fairy elves, you have a job of great importance and consequence. The toy elves make the toys, but you decide which children get them by placing names on the naughty or nice list. If a child in your assigned neighborhood is naughty, then you put them down for a lump of coal. If the child is good, they are eligible for one toy on their list. If they are very good, Santa will give them all of the toys they asked for. Don’t forget tomorrow is the final exam and our last class. Study hard tonight,
said Miss Holly encouragingly.
All of the fairy elves chatted excitedly as they left the classroom. On December first, two days from today, they would start their assignments around the world.
Igor, a good looking blond fairy elf, moved away from the group and waited in the doorway blocking it. We’re all going to Santa’s workshop to see what the toy elves are making. There are lots of new toys this year!
he exclaimed, Ivy, do you want to come?
He looked at her and pretended not to see Elmer.
