About this ebook

Didi Pierpont needs an in-depth interview with a rodeo participant at the Northern Texas Regional Championships. Problem is, most of the entrants remember her from her beauty pageant days and don’t take her seriously. Right before a calf-roping event, she lines up an interview with a striking Native American cowboy. But the calf is uncooperative, and Chay Red Fox is wheeled out on a stretcher. What’s an ace reporter to do but volunteer to watch him for symptoms of a concussion?

Chay’s cocky attitude is his defense against the allure of this nosy, but sexy reporter. He doesn’t think his soul can take another hit from a woman. But she hangs tighter than a bull rider, forcing him to question his determination to protect his privacy and his heart.

The more Didi learns about this intriguing man, the more her heart melts. Can she keep her journalistic distance, or will she succumb to the man who has her tied in knots?

Author

Linda Carroll-Bradd

After years spent in the administrative support field, Linda decided to exercise another part of her brain and write a novel. She loved reading romance and figured that's what she'd write. Easier said than done. After years of workshops and RWA chapter meetings, she finally saw her manuscripts place in contests. Twelve years after her first writing class, she sold a confession story. From that point on, she couldn't be stopped and is always pleased when her sweet contemporary and historical stories find homes. With interests as widespread as baking, crocheting, watching dog agility matches, and reading thrillers by Swedish authors, Linda is the mother to 4 adult children and grandmother to 2 granddaughters. She currently lives in the southern California mountains with her husband of almost 34 years and their two spoiled dogs.

    Chapter One

Didi Pierpont twisted a strand of long hair as she read over the Rodeo Events Listing. Why hadn’t she paid better attention when her brothers discussed the events they competed in? She folded the paper, tucked it in her purse, and faced the pitted mirror in the Panhandle Regional Arena. You are a journalist. You will get through this interview. You will be fantastic. She stretched her lips into a wide smile and inspected her pearly white teeth for any telltale remains of her dinner salad.

The phone in her purse thrummed out the theme from Jaws and heaving a sigh, she grabbed it. Hi, Mama. With practiced strokes, she applied lipstick as she listened to her mother’s request for help with a sewing project. I can’t come tonight. No, I’m not on a date. I’m working. Using a baby finger, she swiped away extra color at the corner of her mouth. I told you about my assignment at the regional rodeo. Yes, young women are allowed to write this kind of article. As she listened to another of her mother’s tirade about her bad choices in life, Didi forced her jaw muscles to release.

Steer wrestlers, check in with the ring steward. The garbled announcement rang against the concrete walls of the restroom.

They’re calling the next event. Gotta go, Mama. With a definitive click, she turned off her cell phone and dropped it back in her shoulder bag. A final look in the mirror to study her outfit. A slight tug on the strap of the lace camisole and an adjustment to center the silver concho belt over her denim skirt. With a shake of her head, she flipped back her long hair. Squaring her shoulders, she strode to the door and stepped into the back hallway of the arena. Time to find a subject.

The buzz of conversations filled the air like a hive of honeybees. Earthy aromas of sweaty animals and damp dirt mixed with dung assaulted her nose. She drew her press pass from her purse and clipped it to her skirt waistband. After pausing to let a family with young kids walk by, she turned left and followed, adding the stomp of her cowboy boots to theirs. The family turned right toward the grandstands and she turned left toward the backstage dressing area.

Hey, hey, looking good, lady. A tall cowboy stepped into the walkway and blocked her path.

From the left, another man joined the first. If it ain’t Double-D Pierpont.

Her jaw clamped at the tacky high school nickname that called attention to her endowed figure. Evening, Thomas, Derek. You here to compete? Maybe finding a subject would be easier than she thought.

Sure enough. With a wide grin, Thomas thumbed back his hat. Bareback broncs for me, and Derek’s signed up for saddle broncs.

I’m here to interview some competitors. Interested in helping me out? She flashed her best beauty pageant smile. A local-boys-do-good angle might work.

Interview? Thomas snorted and shook his head. What are you rattling on about?

Didi tapped a lilac-painted fingernail on her press pass. "I work for the Dallas County Community Gazette."

Hell, it’s Friday night. Loosen up. Why bother your pretty little head with work? After my event, I’ll buy you a drink. Thomas ran a finger down her arm and he winked. We’ll relive old times.

With great effort, she managed not to cringe. Instead, she shot him a low-wattage, placating smile and angled her arm away from his touch. These guys were two of the biggest mistakes from her regrettable days as a buckle bunny.

I remember the old Double-D as a great little partier. Always ready for a few laughs. From her other side, Derek ran a hand over her shoulder, sliding a finger
