Chapter 1
Hannah, we need some ideas here,
announced Ella as she plumped down in the sofa across from where Hannah was curled up in the armchair with a book.
There’s a problem?
asked Hannah.
It’s Joe,
said Ella, waving at Joe, who had followed her in and was investigating the tropical fish tank.
What’s wrong with Joe?
asked Hannah. He seems fine to me.
Counsellor at school is after him. She says he doesn’t talk enough.
Ah,
said Hannah, looking at Joe. Joe tended to talk in single-word sentences but he was really smart and knew exactly what he was talking about. And usually everyone else did too. He just didn’t see the need to say a lot of words to make his meaning clear. Joe shrugged.
Fuss,
was his contribution to the discussion.
So why now?
asked Hannah. She thought things had been fairly settled.
She’s new,
explained Ella. Keen. She’s worried that our father being missing has got Joe ‘disturbed’.
Stupid,
said Joe.
Mmm, I don’t think she’s exactly stupid Joe,
said Ella thoughtfully, a bit over-anxious, perhaps.
Umm, if you don’t mind my asking,
began Hannah. Where exactly is your father anyway? Nobody talks about it and I didn’t like to ask.
He went on a trip for some sort of experiment and hasn’t returned yet,
said Ella. "The scientists were developing some new sort of travel and got to the point of testing it with people. Dad was dead
