    Chapter One

Hannah? asked Ella one day. She was watching her friend trace a design onto a sheet of copper for a table mat.

Mmm? responded Hannah as she carefully rounded a curve.

You know that picture in our sitting room, The Home-something? Ella continued.

The Homecoming, yes, Hannah said, sitting back to check her work. What about it?

Well, Ella drew a little design with her finger on the table cloth. It’s changing.

Hannah looked at her. Ella, it can’t be changing. It’s a picture. You mean it’s growing mould or something?

No, insisted Ella, the picture is doing different things. The woman in the picture is different and the animals aren’t always in the same place. Come and I’ll show you. Hannah put down her tracing tool and followed Ella to the sitting room and up to the picture of a soldier greeting his wife.

Look, see, that piglet was over by the other fence yesterday. And doesn’t the lady look pregnant to you? said Ella.

She does look very large, Hannah said. I can’t really remember what she was like before.

She wasn’t that big last month, I’m absolutely positive.

Has Joe noticed anything? Hannah asked. Ella’s brother, Joe, was generally very observant, although he said little.

Not that he has said and I haven’t asked. Ella called out Joe, Joe? and a thumping down the stairs preceded a blond head of hair around the door.

    Problem? he asked.

No, just a question, replied his sister. You know this picture here? Have you noticed anything strange about it?

Joe studied the picture and shook his head. What? he asked.

You haven’t noticed any changes, Joe? Things moving around? asked Hannah. Joe grinned at her.

    Kidding?

No, really, broke in Ella. She described again what she had seen. Joe was shaking his head as she got more and more excited. Then he held up a finger.

Test he said and shot out of the room and upstairs. He reappeared holding a piece of paper and a pencil. The girls watched with interest as he did a rapid sketch of stick figures standing in their various places. Carefully labelling each one, he double-checked positions. Content with the result, he took it away upstairs.

Good idea, said Hannah. There’s no way you can get at it. She took a look at Ella’s face and hurriedly added Not that you would, I know. It just makes the test more scientifically accurate. Ella reluctantly nodded.

The next day, Hannah brought her brother Toby with her for the grand unveiling of results. Joe waved the drawing as he came downstairs. Ella led the way into the sitting room. She sat on one of the huge armchairs and Hannah leaned against the arm as the boys pored over the drawing, comparing it with the picture.

Hey, where’s that pig? said Toby.

Fence, said Joe, checking the sketch.

    Here? asked Toby,
