A little predictable at times but it was still a fun and entertaining read.

It's a comic book without the pictures! In the world of this book, superheroes and ubervillians exist and each town has its own super-population. It's a cute idea and Estep handles it well with that slightly over-the-top feeling most comics have (at least the ones from my childhood).Carmen catches her boyfriend, who (surprise!!) is a superhero, having sex with her best friend, who (surprise again!!) is an ubervillian - on her wedding day. Carmen vows that no one will ever be hurt like that again and makes it her life's work to unmask superheroes and ubervillians. The book deals with the (somewhat inevitable) results of her quest. It's a rather light and fluffy read, but great fun.

An easy weekend read. There are no deep, overly-insightful themes in this book, it is one of those 'fun reads' that you look for when you need a quick pick-me-up book. I got hooked pretty early in the book and was dead to the world for an entire Saturday. The plot itself runs a lot like a comic book - pretty streamlined with the occasional side step for the sub-stories going on. This is an up and coming sub-genre of supernatural chick lit, and I will be pretty pleased...a refreshing option other than all those vampire and werewolf stories that seem to have saturated my shelves.

I really liked this book and I thought it was hysterically funny, quirky and cute, a great fast paced summer read. Very light and airy , had a couple of dark moments, I would recommend it who doesn't want to be or date a super hero.

Hell hath no fury than a woman scorned. On Carmen's wedding day she found out that her fiance and her best friends were entangled in a very shocking way. She literally caught him with his pants down while her best friend moan with pleasure, after her heart shattered into million pieces, the shock did not end there, in the throes of undressing, she caught a glimpse of another clothing underneath, and found out that her fiance was a superhero named Machinator (controls machines with his mind) and Crush (freakishly super strength). So what do you do if you are an investigative report scorned and heartbroken? You take a picture and turn your humiliation into a headliner. And that was exactly what Carmen did, she made it her personal vendetta to expose superheros and ubervillains so nobody won't feel cheated like her ever again. And more months / years she was successful at it, people are fascinated by her skills on uncovering who is behind those mask and spandex until one of the superheroes group member called Fearless Five committed suicide after being exposed.Booed and threatened by the public, Carmen was forced to write the society page of the newspaper. But her life got even more complicated when she was kidnapped by the ubervillain nemesis of Fearless Five called the Terrible Triad. She is of course being black mailed and was given some nasty image of how they are going to torture her but then she met Striker (leader of the Fearless Five) and she never thought a superhero can be so good looking with a spandex. Conflicted with the past and stressed out by what is happening in the present, Carmen still did what she does best, nosy, sarcastic, funny and impressive on everything.I love the story the plot, the humor, the characters and the ending. I haven't read much of a superhero vs. villains book but every time I do, I always end up wanting more and Jennifer Estep's is no exception.I wish Big Time series could be all about Carmen and her superheroes... a girl could dream

A great summer read. The author describes it as a comic book without the pictures, but with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. Definitely doesn't take itself too seriously, even though it's all about the Struggle Between Good and Evil. Looking forward to the other books in the series as well as other books by the author. Thanks to Felicia Day for the recommendation.

I like this book because it is something different from a lot of other paranormal romances that are out there. It is not about vampires, werewolves, or the like. It is about superheroes and supervillians. The book has the feel of a romantic comic book, only there are no pictures. The main character has hard feelings towards superheroes and ubervillains, as her ex-fiance was a superhero whom she found in bed with her ex-best friend, a ubervillain. So Carmen moves to Bigtime, N.Y. to try to expose any superheroe's identity. But after she outs a member of the Fearless Five and he is killed by ubervillains, Carmen feels she is to blame for putting his life at risk. In order to make things right, Carmen puts aside exposing superheroes, but it doesn't mean she can prevent herself from falling in love with another superhero.

A light, fun, fantastic street view of comic book heros, I enjoyed KARMA GIRL immensely. Carmen Cole is a heroine after any bookworm's heart, leveraging her organizational skills with intuitive leaps to make one heck of a reference librarian (though no librarian would travel with garbage bags full of Xerox copies, Carmen could benefit from the data-savvy of a few actual library science classes). Ultimately, Carmen learns that even without super powers, one must be careful to work for the side of good, and I enjoyed watching this most human of characters hold her own with the superhero/ubervillain big boys.

I definitely picked the word "light" to describe KARMA GIRL for a reason, this book requires a certain amount of suspended disbelief. You will be repaid ten-fold, however, in a heroine who personifies grace under pressure (even amidst a nervous breakdown), a fun, well balanced look under the cape at some of the less convenient aspects of a world with super powers, and characters that entertain as they grow. KARMA GIRL borrows freely from common romantic and comic book tropes, but these plot elements are never an excuse to skip on character development for the heroine. While the people in her life are a little larger than life and two dimensional, Carmen has enough nuance to carry this book without a missed step.

A much quicker read than Carolyn Crane's Disillusionist series, I also found KARMA GIRL to be easier to enjoy straight out of the gate. For anyone who likes to play in the superhero sandbox but was looking for a bit more fun and romance, Estep has written a admirable Gal Friday who teeters on the line between good and bad without ever losing her cool (or my attention). I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to see if Carmen would given in to dispair or step up and embrace her inner superhero, and amidst all the spandex and radioactive mutations, it was Carmen's puzzle-solving mojo that saved the day for me.

Flat characters and a not particularly interesting plot. Couldn't get past chapter three.

In KG every town in the world has its own superhero who shows up to rescue people from natural disasters and things like runaway trains, collapsing bridges and burning buildings. And of course every town also has its own ubervillain who wants to rule the world and cause lots of headaches for superheroes.KG is a very solid read for a debut book and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Written in first person, it was a funny blend of comic book superheros and chicklit. The humor was not laugh out loud funny, but rather more tongue-in-cheek as if Estep was poking fun of the wacky world she had created. And that worked for me surprisingly well.Carmen Cole is the top investigative reporter for the town newspaper in Beginnings, Tennessee. On her wedding day she is shocked to discover her fiancé, Matt, and her best friend, Karen, in bed together. As if that wasn't enough she also discovers that Matt is a superhero and Karen is an ubervillain (because, of course, both of them are still wearing their spandex suits). She's extremely hurt by their betrayal so as an act of revenge she writes a front page article exposing their identities. And then she becomes a bit wacked out and goes off the deep end. She decides to make it her mission to expose the identities of as many superheroes and ubervillains as she can find. She spends the next three years after the betrayal moving from town to town, newspaper to newspaper, leaving a trail of unmasked superheroes and ubervillains behind her. Eventually she makes it to Bigtime, New York, where a group of superheroes, the Fearless Five, and their enemies, the Terrible Triad, are legendary throughout the world. Carmen sets to work on exposing them and eventually unmasks the identity of one member of the Fearless Five, Travis Teague (aka Tornado). But shortly after, Travis commits suicide and Carmen realizes she has gone too far and comes to deeply regret her vendetta. Carmen is consumed by remorse, and her life and career take a downturn. Bad karma, she figures. There are lots of wacky superheroes and ubervillains who provided some comic book moments and it was all a little silly to me but had me smiling quite often. Kind of like watching a Batman or Spiderman movie. I really wanted to cut right to the romance but Carmen and Sam (aka Striker) don't meet until about 50 pages into the book. But once they get together their chemistry was great and the action really takes off. It was no mystery figuring out the identities of members of the Fearless Five and Terrible Triad and sometimes the whole thing went over the top and I caught myself rolling my eyes. But overall it was a fun change of pace. Carmen and Sam/Striker are likeable characters and the best part of the book. (Grade: B)

So I read this book many years ago and realized the other day it was part of a series. I decided to give it a quick reread so I could check out the rest of the series. Carman had her heart broken by her exfiance and former best friend when she caught them together, on her wedding day....She decides to expose them and soon makes a name for herself unmasking superheroes and ubervillians. Then she gets to Big Time and everything starts going wrong. She ends up reporter for the society page and falling for another super hero, and having the Terrible Triad threaten her. She knows she should stay away to keep everyone safe, but she's not sure she can.

This was a fun read for girls who are into comics and want a fun romance/super hero origin story. I really enjoyed it. I did figure everything out rather quickly, but I was't sure if that was b/c I had read it before or b/c it was transparent.
