    About the Authors

    Roderick Lane’s interest in natural medicine was sparked by his mother, a hospital matron who took an unconventional line with patients – opting for natural remedies rather than drugs. He went on to study Chinese medicine as part of his Martial Arts training in the 1970s.

    Roderick was lecturer in Clinical Nutrition at Howell College from 1990 to 1993 and Secretary of the National Guild of Clinical Nutritionists from 1988 to 1992. He also co-founded the London College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Science in 1992, and has since filled the post of Registrar of the College and lectures in Clinical Nutrition and Protocol.

    Now in private practice in London, he holds Diplomas in Naturopathy, Clinical Nutrition and Holistic Health.

    Sarah Stacey is an award-winning journalist specialising in health, beauty and gardening, a TV producer and bestselling author. She is currently Wellbeing Editor on the Mail on Sunday YOU magazine.

    How the Adam and Eve Diet began

    If you are perfectly happy with your size and shape, have boundless energy and a clear head, sleep soundly every night, never suffer from nagging illnesses and feel on top of the world most days, you probably don’t need this book. If, however, you want to look and feel better, the Adam and Eve Diet can make a dramatic difference to your daily life.

    You probably picked up this book because you want to lose weight – like most people in the Western world. According to recent research, nine out of 10 of us have been on a diet at some point in our lives, and this very moment half of the people around us are trying to become thinner. The fact that the incidence of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other obesity-related illnesses are rising and predicted to take up ever-increasing amounts of Western healthcare issues and budgets suggests that most of us are on diets that are not working.

    Every new diet offers a new promise, and we ricochet from one to another in the vain hope of finding a regime that will solve our problems. Ultimately, we all want the same thing from food – we want to enjoy it, eat what we want when we want, derive increased health, wellbeing and vitality both physically and mentally, and, of course, not get fat!

    The sad truth is that the majority of diets don’t work. This is because many are based upon ‘fad’ and deprivation principles; they require you to drop your calories to an unrealistic level, which cannot be maintained long term. You almost certainly won’t enjoy your food, you won’t feel well and, even if you do lose some weight, you are unlikely to keep it off. Research shows that most people not only put back the weight they lose, but they gain more. This is because constant dieting or on/off dieting causes the metabolism to slow down. When you return to eating normally the body has learned to ‘hold on’ to any food it gets and store it as fat against the next period of deprivation. The longer the cycle continues in this way, the harder it becomes to lose weight.

    The key principle behind the Adam and Eve Diet is that of Functional Bio-Typing; that is, one size does not fit all, one diet will not suit everybody. Man is an adaptive animal, constantly changing and adapting to his environment. What suits an Eskimo will not work for a South Sea Islander in a tropical paradise.     Why does the Adam and Eve Diet work?

    This revolutionary diet works because it pinpoints your individual biological type. This may sound confusing but it’s quite straightforward. Your biological (bio) type is determined by the glandular biochemistry that has been handed down to you across generations, through evolution.

    There are two fundamental factors underlying this naturopathic approach – one is ancient, the other modern. First of all, medical scientists are increasingly aware that human beings are still governed by the biological traits we developed many millions of years ago, despite living in the 21st century. These are crucial to our whole make-up: physical, mental and psychological. Secondly, accompanying this legacy we have to deal with the impact of modern life – another shooting match of physical, mental and psychological pressures. The Adam and Eve Diet was developed over many years by Roderick Lane. During his study of nutrition he found that the concept of body typing appeared in many ancient and traditional medical systems, including Ayurveda (from India) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). But far from developing a common prototype, these systems all appeared to focus on different factors, through which constitutional types were identified.

    In his own clinical practice, Lane began to notice that different clients responded to different diets and to specific nutrient combinations. Clients also fell into distinct patterns which he christened their ‘Functional Biotype’. Eventually, he identified and named five Biotypes, based on a person’s dominant gland (see panel below). Functional Biotypes are confirmed when the body becomes fully formed at puberty, which is interestingly, also the time at which we are at our physical peak. In Chapter 1, you can identify your own Functional Biotype by answering the questionnaires.

    The five Functional Biotypes

    Lane concluded that the five Functional Biotypes evolved in response to the needs of early man. And those needs were all geared towards one thing: survival. Over the millennia, during which mankind evolved to its present state, there was a continuous cycle of adaptation that continues today. Just as the wily and competitive Cro Magnon pushed out the Neanderthals, another genetic mutation, the Homo sapiens, evolved between 200,000 and 100,000 years ago in response to the need to stay alive in different climates and terrains. We now know that our ancestors did not live in isolation, that different species of early man interbred and as the years pass representative samples of early humanity are found to have lived and walked upon the planet earlier and earlier than previously believed.

    Lane hypothesises that the first anatomically modern Homo sapiens were ‘Hunter-Gatherer’ types, and that today’s Hunter Gatherers are the descendants of the people who first walked out of prehistoric Africa to populate the world. As you will discover in Chapter 1, these Functional Biotypes are admirably designed to roam for long distances, hunting and gathering their food as they go.

    ‘Pathfinders’, the tallest of the Functional Biotypes, probably came next, then Pioneers, Farmer Gardeners and Dancers the most modern in evolutionary terms. Along with their physical characteristics, these Functional Biotypes also developed personality traits that enabled them to adapt, and many of these are still evident today.

    However, in the 21st century we are not only the product of evolution. We are also hugely influenced by the pressures of modern living and increasingly abnormal sleep patterns as the ’24-hour’ day becomes more and more prevalent. Chronic stress is increasingly recognised as a growing problem with health and wellbeing implications. Technological advances also produce their own challenges in terms of removing established boundaries at the beginning and end of the working day and feeling pressured to constantly stay connected to others. In the Western world we don’t have to fight for enough to eat (in fact the reverse situation exists), but if you ask people how they feel you are unlikely to get a positive response. Sure, you’ll find a few people who claim to feel very healthy and happy most of the time, but we bet that most people will say that they are anxious, tired, lacking in energy, and suffering from a chronic state of stress, anxiety, feeling a degree (and often several degrees) under par. Try it, and ask yourself, too. How do you feel?

    Stress can place an intolerable strain on many areas of your body, including your glands, and many of the niggling (and not-so-niggling) health problems experienced by the majority of the population are either caused or exacerbated by stress.

    You can identify your own individual Stress Weakness Points by answering the detailed checklists in Chapter 3, and correct them by making lifestyle changes, and taking specific supplements, herbs and homeopathic remedies.

    Because each of us is unique, it is impossible to say how long it will take to put things right, but you will begin to experience a relief of symptoms as the root problems are slowly addressed. If you’ve had a problem for a long time, it will take longer to correct than something less deep-seated, but the good news is that almost everything can be improved by following a few simple guidelines.     Big claims are made for every new diet, but we believe that the Adam and Eve Diet is revolutionary. There has never, to our knowledge, been a diet that combines wisdom from both modern Western medical knowledge and the traditional healthcare systems of the East.

    The theory of this diet is simply common sense. By identifying and eating the foods that suit your specific body type, and by correcting your Stress Weaknesses, you can achieve your perfect natural weight and experience a renewed energy and zest for life.

    The Biotype theory also explains a conundrum that has been foxing experts – and dieters – for decades. This is the fact that some diets undoubtedly do work for some people, while they are completely ineffective for others. The explanation is that it depends on your Functional Biotype. If you have, by chance, happened on the diet that is optimally suited to your Functional Biotype, it will work for you (at least to some extent).
