The story of the novel is set in mid 19th century Paris. The story revolves around an unmarried middle-aged woman. She has an extended family, but she is the one who plans the destruction of her family.
Valerie Marneffe happens to be an unhappy married young lady. Bette connives with her to seduce and torment several men.
One of the tormented men is Baron Hector Hulot. He is the husband of Bette’s cousin Adeline. To make Valerie happy, Hector Hulot sacrifices his family’s fortune and reputation. Eventually, Valerie leaves Hector Hulot for a businessman named Crevel.

is a French novel written by Honore de Balzac. It was titled La Cousine Bette
in French. The novel was first published in the year 1846.
The story of the novel is set in mid 19th century Paris. The story revolves around an unmarried middle-aged woman. She has an extended family, but she is the one who plans the destruction of her family.
Valerie Marneffe happens to be an unhappy married young lady. Bette connives with her to seduce and torment several men.
One of the tormented men is Baron Hector Hulot. He is the husband of Bette’s cousin Adeline. To make Valerie happy, Hector Hulot sacrifices his family’s fortune and reputation. Eventually, Valerie leaves Hector Hulot for a businessman named Crevel.
The characters in the novel Cousin Bette
represent polarities of contrasting morality. Bette is quite vengeful and Valerie is disingenuous. Adeline is quite merciful and her daughter Hortense is also very patient.
The head of the Hulot family is the slave of his sexual desire. Hortense’s husband is the Polish exile Wenceslas Steinbeck. He is a man
