20 SENATORS 14 REPRESENTATIVES DEAD
CAUSE STILL UNKNOWN
The paper rattled in my hands until I couldn't read it as I looked for the names I already knew would be there. The list matched the defendants list in my mind. All of these names had been found guilty of violating constitutional law.
That couldn't be a capital offense, though. Anyway, the trial had just been a mock up to teach justice and the finer points of constitutional law to some students, hadn't it? Thinking about the size of my check and what the others had been paid, I knew better in my heart.
My name is Clay Jackson. Yes, that Clay Jackson. I'd earned a little reputation for defending those two murderers a couple of years ago, but hey, they both deserved a fair trial. It wasn't my fault the prosecutor didn't do her job. I fully expected them to be convicted and sent to prison for life. I just wanted to stop the death penalty, not exonerate them.
Nine months ago I received the first contact. Late in the afternoon, my secretary announced, You have a call on line two.
Who is it? I'm a little busy right now. Take a message and tell them I'll call back in about an hour?
He insists that it's imperative to speak to you now. Says his name is John Norton. He says he wants to retain you to defend somebody.
Tell him I'll call back in an hour.
Kathy hung up and I went back to my notes. A few seconds later, she buzzed again, That man said to ask you if a million dollars would get your attention.
My head jerked up at that. My practice had taken a jump after my win, but I still had a whopper of a student loan. A million dollars would eradicate that and give me a lot more options. Besides, Helena, Montana had a lot of other competition.
I reached for the phone, Hello, this is Clay Jackson.
Mr. Jackson, I know you are very busy, so I'll come right to the point. I represent a very wealthy client who would like to put you on retainer for the next six months.
After a short pause to think, I answered, And just what would I be doing to earn this retainer? I can't just dump my existing clients.
Mr. Norton said, My client wants you to work on some mock trials defending some people accused of violating the constitution. There will be a prosecutor, a judge and a jury. This will be filmed for class studies. My client will pay for any research as an extra cost. I think this entire mock trial should take about three to four months. Would you be able to postpone your current clients for that long?
My mind whirled at the possibilities. Three of them could easily be postponed. The other though – at last I said, "I can deal with three of them but one might be a problem. I'd have to do some checking before I could commit. How much of that million dollars would I
