INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION IN SPAIN
It can be an unnerving experience, your first time in the ferretería (hardware store). Unlike in other countries, Spain still holds onto the old-style shop consisting of a wooden counter, a large store room and a helpful proprietor. Trying to explain exactly what it is that you need can be an experience often containing elements of embarrassment, bemusement and even farce.
That’s where this dictionary comes in handy. No longer will you find yourself trying to mime what it is you need, or end up coming away with something different to what you thought you had asked for.
Many people who move to Spain do so with a dream of renovating a property of some description. Maybe it’s an old abandoned finca in the countryside, or perhaps it’s an idyllic looking village house, or even an ‘off plan’ property under some stage of construction. Whatever the state of your property you will no doubt find yourself undertaking some building work – or at the least directing others as they do so. And just the like at the ferretería, the builders’ merchant can be an unnerving and chaotic place for the uninitiated. In my experience these places tend to be packed with pushy contractors, all vying for the attention of the over-worked clerk. They’re not the sort of places where a stuttering foreigner attempting to describe an obscure item using sign language is generally appreciated.
So, the hope is that this dictionary can save you some of the potential embarrassment and enable you to communicate clearly what it is that you need. It will also help you in dealing with Spanish builders, should you end up employing any. Although often stereotyped as otherwise, Spanish builders usually know what they’re doing and may not appreciate any ‘advice’ from someone who has just arrived in their country – even if it is well-meant. Nevertheless, communication breakdowns can occur, and this dictionary will go some way in helping you to resolve these.
Most people moving to Spain will take up residency on one of the Mediterranean costas, although the number of people opting for the mountainous inland regions is on the up. Wherever you end up living it is likely that the building designs and materials will be very different to what you are used to back in your home country. The usage of plaster and brick is almost universal in Spain (except for the northern part of the country, which will look a lot more familiar to northern European eyes). Tiled floors are much more common than carpets and windows are usually fitted with grilles.
While this dictionary will certainly enable you to communicate more clearly in Spanish it is essential that you also receive advice on the way of doing things in your locality. Spain is a big country and regional differences are rife. Regional variations in the naming of building products have been included where relevant.
All that remains to be said is buena suerte with your building project – I hope you will never again have to mime the phrase for cork soundproof insulating tiles!
