    CHAPTER 1

    NEW TRACK CHALLENGE

    What if I crash?

    Austin tried to ignore the thought that dashed through his mind. His go-kart hugged the track. Austin sat just inches from the ground. Dark asphalt rushed past. The kart’s wide tires gripped the ground.

    New racetracks were always a big challenge. The track was new to Austin. A crash wouldn’t be unheard of for a new racer at a track.

    Austin held on tight to the steering wheel. The curve in the track was coming up. He eased his foot slightly off the gas pedal. The curve didn’t look too tight, but Austin didn’t want to take any chances.

    Some of the other racers on the track were not as careful. Several people flew past. They know the track better than I do, Austin said to himself. That’s what I get for being the new kid on the track.

    Austin pushed down on the gas pedal a little more. His heart beat quickly. His hands were sweating inside his gloves.

    He turned the steering wheel to the left. The go-kart coasted along the turn. It never even came close to the bales of hay lined along the track’s edge. The hay was there to soften the blow from
