Keeper Of My Heart - Therese A Kraemer

    Prologue

Foster Bryan placed the paper into the typewriter and decided on the name for the last sequel to his science fiction novels. Of course, he had no idea how this one was going to end but he certainly knew how to begin it. Recently, he finished Timeless Love and it brought tears to his eyes missing his eldest son, but he knew Adam was happy in the future, in the year 2014. Thankfully, he was a doctor and saved Drew’s life when he was shot. By taking his younger brother in to the future, he met his wife, a Creole doctor.

Foster had to smile, because up until the time Drew was shot, Adam was content living a quiet life, running a small practice in New York City. As his brother was recuperating, he had fallen love with Doctor Dannie La Pierre. It’s difficult for him to accept that his youngest son, Drew, now twenty-three will soon be the last the leave the nest. Taking a puff on his pipe, and the smell of his sweet tobacco, the aroma of delicious sugar cookies drifted into the study. He took out his notes, written in his POV and recalled as if it were yesterday when it all started.

In 2014, David Kish, a young man did the one thing he was warned against: he turned back the hands on an antique watch and he woke up in 1863, in the south during the Civil War. And history had been erroneously changed and so was his life.

Foster typed the title, Keeper Of My Heart, and signed his penname, Josh Grant.

    One

Thank God my brother Adam was able to bring me into the future...

Drew Bryant sat in the hospital bed mulling over the events of his crazy life. He winced at the ache in his chest. Adam said it had been touch and go when he was found bleeding on the front steps of his parent’s house a week ago. He recalled the pain before he blacked out. Gazing out the window, it amazed him how high up he was and that his brother brought him into the future, in the year 2014.

Luckily his mother had explained to her children about television, airplanes and cars because the first time he looked out the window in the hospital, he was amazed to see so many of those horseless carriages on the ground and flying vehicles in the skies. Now, he had more material for his father’s books. He wished the public who read his father’s science fiction novels knew that it was all real events taken from their own lives.

Drew still has a hard time believing that his mother was from the year 2014 and his brother, Reece lived on another planet, light years away in the future. Now, once more that watch had saved his life. The room smelled clean and cool air was coming out of a vent. This was the first day his mind was clear enough to think. And think he did, trying to understand why someone would shoot him. There was only one person Drew would consider; the crime boss, Lefty Lew.

He was a reporter and photographer, and knowing that some of the city’s worst gangsters hung out at the Purple Pussy Cat Club, he had gone there one night with some friends. The beautiful singer, Ginger Lee came out and sang a torch song, and she took his breath away. But when he tried to go to her dressing room, a bouncer told him to get lost, she was the owner’s broad. Drew didn’t take the suggestion and sent her flowers every night for a week. One evening he waited for her in a back alley knowing she’d come out the stage door. He paced nervously, jingling the loose change in his pocket; he could still recall the stench of the garbage and the few rats that scurried about, keeping him company.

The stage door creaked and she came out as she said goodnight to someone. He took a deep breath, and then slowly exhaled it. When he approached the singer, she tried to shrug him off but he told her he had sent the flowers. She gave him an incredulous look, as if he had lost his mind, and maybe he had for taking the chance. But then she gave him a slow smile and told him she was Lefty Lew’s girl and if he valued his skin, he better stay away. He wasn’t frightened and maybe he was deluding himself to think that. He had to admit to himself that he had been foolish but foolish or not his persistence paid off. They got involved often, meeting in a hotel for trysts, but now he was certain some- one found out and squealed to Lefty Lew. He prayed that Ginger Lee was all right.

That afternoon his lady doctor came in to check his vitals and his brother came in when she left. Hey, where have you been Adam? he pushed the control to sit up. Adam sat with a loud huff. Brother you’ll never believe what happened to the doc and me. Drew chucked then groaned If it had anything to do with that watch, I’ll believe anything you have to tell me.

Adam smiled. Our family’s really one for the books and father sure has written much about time travel, he has enough material just from us. You know I’m tempted to find this David Kish, and tell him what he had started when he found his grandfather’s old watch, wound it, and went back to 1863.

Yeah, and I still have a hard time believing what you told me yesterday that our mother is here. But why did you take the chance and come back to this time and place?

It was mom’s suggestion, because she had worked with Doctor Dannie La Pierre, knowing the physician would save your life.

To bad we can’t tell her the truth about mother.

You know when father was brought here into the future by David and Sarah, he was badly beaten.

Yes, and it was Sarah who accidently took mother with them when she came and took pop back to the eighteen hundreds.

Well, pop was brought here yesterday, and I bumped into mom. He scratched his chin and laughed. She kept telling me how much I resembled her father. We’ll have to tell our parents this when we get home, Drew.

And when will that be, brother?

    Adam shrugged. I hope soon.

You don’t look too sure. You’re in love with the Creole doctor, right. It wasn’t a question.

Yes, and to answer your previous question, Dannie found out the hard way about the watch. She wound it and we found ourselves on the Titanic moments before it hit the iceberg.

Oh, my God! he exclaimed and Adam stood and walked to the window.

That wasn’t the worst of it, she lost the watch.

"Oh, my God! How in hell did you...?

Adam leaned his brow against the window and sighed heavily. He turned saying, As the ship was sinking I met a man who found it.

Drew looked up at the ceiling and mouthed, Thank God!

Adam sat again. Don’t thank God yet because we found ourselves at Wood- stock. I have never seen so many unruly kids. Dannie said they were protesting the Vietnam War, but...it wasn’t actually a war. He raised his hand. Don’t ask, I didn’t ask either. They were all high on a drug called pot that they smoked. And that’s not the best part. Drew groaned. Our nephew Tristram landed in the field, behind a barn with a friend he called, Rodger, the draft dodger. He was returning the Hippie to his own era 1969, after taking the young man to his planet, Umatilla, and home.

Oh, my God! Of all the dumb luck that our brother Reece still allows his kids to fly that damn time travel ship! He held up his hand. I know it’s the only way our niece and nephew can see their grandparents since they live on another planet far into the future, the year 2096. Is that how you came back to Virginia, in his craft?

Yes. And Trist sends his love and wishes you a quick recovery. He also invited the doctor and me to visit Umatilla. Of course Dannie declined the offer.

What are you going to do about her? he asked.

I can’t leave her and she can’t come back with us. We already decided that I would stay.

We? Why don’t you bring me home and come back. This is not something you have to commit to right away.

I’ll think about going back with you Drew. I would like to say goodbye to mom and dad.

Good, I’m glad to hear that Adam. I can’t wait to get home myself. I have some unfinished business to see about.

Adam stood and groused, I hope you’re not saying what I think you are! Don’t you think getting beaten to a pulp and now getting shot in one lifetime would be enough to make you wise up?

Drew lowered his bed. No lectures brother. Now I’m tired and my life is mine to do with what I want!

Yeah, and it might not be yours very long, Adam grumbled leaving the room. He was tired and he also needed to think, wondering what was waiting for him at home besides worried parents. Maybe another bullet?

The next morning, Adam asked him as soon as he entered, Are you ready? He was indeed waiting for him and Adam closed the curtains and told him that Dannie was in surgery. I want to get back here before she returns from the operating room. With any luck she’ll not even know I left. Let’s see, he looked at his own watch. It’s 11:10, I’ll make sure I’m back by 11:30. Don’t want to chance bumping into myself. Okay, ready? his brother asked him again.

Been up with the sun, so let’s go; I’m beginning to get bed sores lying about all this time. And I’m bored to hell!

Adam took out the antique watch and turned the hands back as the curtains parted.

Oh, there you are, I was looook...

    Two

Damn, what were the chances that the doctor would walk in on them at that moment?

This was Drew’s last thought before he opened his eyes and found himself on the ground in the back of his parent’s home, gazing up at the clear blue sky.

Oh, what was the saying after a trip? It’s good to be home.

He breathed in the clean smell of the grass and swatted at a fly, but his butt was bruised by a stone and he grumbled, You think we could have appeared on a more comfortable surface, and rubbed his sore shoulder. He then noticed that the doctor was still unconscious but Adam was sitting up. When his brother saw Dannie, he let out of string of curses.

Oh, oh, how the hell did she get here? Adam commented foolishly.

Drew snorted. How do you think? The same way we did! He began to laugh. Won’t mom and dad be pleased? You finally brought home a girl for them to meet.

Adam gave him a nasty look. Not funny. C’mon, we have to wake her up.

No, not me, count me out. I’m going inside and having a stiff drink. She’s your problem. He could see Adam was about to argue the point when Dannie moaned. Go in, he suggested. I’m sure mom and dad are anxious to know that you’re all right. Maybe you better warn them about the doctor also.

Will do, he agreed whole heartedly and he found his parents in the study where his mother was opening a window to let out the smoke from his old man’s pipe. He was surprised to see her in there as she rarely goes into his domain because of the stale air. His father was typing, as usual with two fingers on that contraption he said he hated. But when he found out how much his mother had paid for it, he decided he better use it. His dad still had no use for the telephone; he should only see the future.

Hi pop. Hi mom, he burst into the room surprising them.

Drew! they cried in unison and before he knew it, they were hugging him and his mother was weeping tears of joy. You’re alive, she hugged him tighter.

Ouch! Careful mom, I still hurt.

    Sorry, she murmured.

Glad to see you son, said his father, wiping the wetness from his eyes also. Where’s your brother?

He’s in the yard, but I must warn you. We brought along a hitchhiker by mistake.

Oh, no, not again, his mother cried, sounding quite annoyed. But before he could explain more, they ran from the house.

Well, he had things to see to. His first stop would be at the newspaper he worked for. He was wondering how he would explain his resent disappearance and how he had healed so quickly from a gunshot wound.

Walking down the street he smiled at his neighbors, happy to be home and alive. Although his mother baked better cookies, he couldn’t pass up going into Mama’s Bakery. It was almost closing time and he knew she’d give him a pastry for free because she didn’t believe in selling leftover wares. By the size of the lady, he knew she brought home what didn’t sell, but some days there wasn’t much left. Mama was wiping down the small table and smiled at him when he entered.

Hello, Drew, how is my favorite and handsomest, young man today? She opened her fleshy arms and he walked into them, expecting to have his breath squeezed out of him. He never minded except he had forgotten about his shoulder wound and winced. Clutching his jaw to keep from groaning, he croaked, Fine, Mama.

And how’s your big brother, the doctor, and your sister Elayne? She hasn’t brought her kids in here for a cookie in a while. And where the hell is Reece? Haven’t seen him in ages.

Err, I guess Elayne is busy with her brood; she just adopted a Chinese baby and a teenage boy.

Mama tsked. God bless that girl, she sure is special.

Yep, and Adam met a lady doctor and they are going to marry and move to Virginia to live. Of course, he could not tell her that they would be living in the year 2014. So that leaves me to eat all your goodies, he chuckled.

Mama flung the towel over her beefy shoulder and went behind the glass partition to get his treat. A woman doctor you say? Well, have times changed. Here son, the last of my apple turnovers. I know they’re your favorite. Then she took a handful of cookies placed them into a bag and told him to give them to Elayne’s children.

Thanks Mama, you’re generous to a fault. He took a bite and licked his fingers. Hmmm, simply delicious; thanks again, you’re my favorite bakery owner, he winked.

She swatted the towel at him Go on, mine is the only bakery in town. He left smiling. If Mama only knew how times have changed.

When he passed a newsstand, he was shocked to discover the day’s date. He was shot on July1st and Adam had brought them back only a day after they had left, July 2nd. He had nothing to worry about now. Apparently, no one but his family knew about the attempt to his life.

The editor was sitting behind his desk. As long as Drew worked for Mr. Brandon, he painted the same picture daily; a barrel of a man, big and powerful in the newspaper profession. He was stern to his employees but fair, not like his last boss who was in bed with the mob. The same boss who had him beaten with in an inch of his life because he had taken a picture of a cop, Charles Becker. According to his sister, Becker was a well- known extortionist who squeezed money from prostitutes. To this day, he had no idea how Elayne knew this, and she wouldn’t say, but it was water under the bridge, so her secret was safe with him. He had other things that were more important now. And he had avoided taking any more pictures of the crooked cop.

Mr. Brandon held up the newspaper in his big, square hands. Smoke from a nasty smelling cigar circled his bald head. He looked up and smiled at Drew, rolling the remaining chewed-up cigar around his yellowed teeth. He removed it and spat in a brown stained hanky that lay next to an open bottle of gin.

That thing is going to kill you, boss, if the booze doesn’t do it first!

Yeah, so I’ve been told, mostly by you, boy. So where have you been this morning?

Before answering, Drew sat on the edge of the cluttered desk, trying to ignore putrid smoke and the soggy cigar that lay in the dirty ashtray. Well, my brother brought home a lady friend and I spent some time talking with her. She’s a doctor like Adam. Mr. Brandon took a swig of the gin and wiped his chin on his grimy sleeve. He was in need of a shave, and Drew believed
