    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I wish to pay tribute to the following people for their invaluable help in the preparation and publication of this book.

To my wife, Lorraine, I owe much thanks for her many hours of typing and proofreading. I owe her even more thanks perhaps for her encouragement and her continuous support both as a wife and as a prayer warrior. Her many suggestions for lists were also very helpful.

I want to especially thank the editorial staff at Bethany House for all their work on the book. They also provided me with many ideas for lists, and were so kind and patient with me.

I want to thank the numerous people who wrote to me with suggestions for new lists.

I met a man in Dallas, Texas, who told me he had given my first book, Meredith’s Book of Bible Lists, to his son, and it turned his son’s life around. That sort of news makes it all worthwhile!

    BIBLIOGRAPHY

    PREFACE

The purpose of Meredith’s Complete Book of Bible Lists is to entertain, interest, fascinate, stimulate, and most of all, educate. Many people have complained that the Bible is dull reading and that they can’t get past all the begats (e.g., Abraham begat Isaac, etc.). Here’s a fresh and informative look at some of the interesting and helpful portions of the Scriptures, showing that the Bible is anything but a dull book. And if this book gets the reader back into The Book, its real purpose will have been fulfilled.

Some people have complained that the Bible (and religion in general) has too many thou shalt nots. While Meredith’s Complete Book of Bible Lists does include some negatives, you will realize from a quick perusal of the Contents pages that the greater weight of Christianity and the Bible is on the positive side—what God has done and is doing for His creation. There are more than four hundred fifty promises from the Bible listed in this book, with special attention paid to conditions for acquiring those promises.

Bible references quoted are from the King James Version, with a few exceptions where the New International Version is used or the New King James Version is used. Some Scripture quotes are paraphrased by the compiler in the interest of condensing longer passages.

The compiler’s preparation for this project includes a thorough familiarity with the Bible; he has read the Old and New Testaments numerous times. His hope is that you will enjoy reading Meredith’s Complete Book of Bible Lists as much as he enjoyed putting it together.

    COMMANDMENTS

Laws form the foundation of civilized society. One of the wonders of history is that so much was summed up in the list known as the Ten Commandments. When Jesus lived on the earth, He taught what He called the two greatest commandments and in so doing produced an even more concise statement. In the final analysis, governing man’s attitude and behavior toward God and his fellow human beings can be summed up in one word—love.

Though this truth is found also in the Old Testament, when Jesus came more than two thousand years ago, He further revealed the nature of God: a God who is a Judge and yet a Father, a King and yet a Savior. We are able to find as many as two hundred fifty New Testament commandments. These do not replace the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament, but are a more detailed, further unfolding of God’s expectations for the way people should live. Included here is a list of Old Testament laws with Jesus’ commentary and application of them.

You will also find Jesus’ exhortation to the unconverted, His commandments concerning human relationships, fifty ways to please God, the apostles’ exhortations about how to treat others, warnings about other spirits, principles for good family relationships, and guidelines for church leaders.

    1. The Ten Commandments

    1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me (Exodus 20:3).

    2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image (Exodus 20:4–5).

    3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain (Exodus 20:7).

    4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy (Exodus 20:8–11).

    5. Honour thy father and thy mother (Exodus 20:12).

    6. Thou shalt not kill (Exodus 20:13).

    7. Thou shalt not commit adultery (Exodus 20:14).

    8. Thou shalt not steal (Exodus 20:15).

    9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour (Exodus 20:16).

    10. Thou shalt not covet any thing that is thy neighbour’s (Exodus 20:17).

    2. The Two Greatest Commandments and the New Commandment

    1. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind (Matthew 22:36–38).

    2. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself (Matthew 22:39).

    3. A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another (John 13:34–35).

    3. The Ten Commandments as They Appear in the New Testament

    1. According to Jesus

    A. Matthew 19:17–19

    1. Thou shalt do no murder.

    2. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

    3. Thou shalt not steal.

    4. Thou shalt not bear false witness.

    5. Honour thy father and thy mother.

    6. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

    B. Mark 10:19

    1. Do not commit adultery.

    2. Do not kill.

    3. Do not steal.

    4. Do not bear false witness.

    5. Defraud not.

    6. Honour thy father and mother.

    C. Luke 18:20

    1. Do not commit adultery.

    2. Do not kill.

    3. Do not steal.

    4. Do not bear false witness.

    5. Honour thy father and thy mother.

    2. According to Paul

    Romans 13:9

    1. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

    2. Thou shalt not kill.

    3. Thou shalt not steal.

    4. Thou shalt not bear false witness.

    5. Thou shalt not covet.

    6. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

    4. Jesus’ Interpretation of Old Testament Law

    1. Thou shalt not kill: But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment (Matthew 5:21–22).

    2. Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart (Matthew 5:27–28).

    3. Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery (Matthew 5:31–32).

    4. Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thy oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all (Matthew 5:33–34).

    5. An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, that ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also (Matthew 5:38–39).

    6. Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy: But I say unto you, Love your enemies (Matthew 5:43–44).

    7. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect (Matthew 5:48).

    8. Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets (Matthew 7:12).

    9. Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man (Matthew 15:2, 10–11).

    10. Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery (Matthew 19:8–9).

    11. Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder (Mark 10:4–6, 9).

    12. Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? And he said unto them, that the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? (Luke 6:2, 5, 9).

    13. Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And he took him, and healed him (Luke 14:3–4).

    14. Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage (Luke 20:28, 34).

    15. The Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work (John 5:16–17).

    16. Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? (John 5:45–47).

    17. Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? (John 7:19).

    18. Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? When they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her (John 8:4–5, 7).

    19. It is written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. I am one that bears witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me (John 8:17–18).

    20. We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvelous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. And they cast him out. Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? Thou hast both seen him, and he it is that talketh with thee (John 9:29–30, 33–35, 37).

    21. For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? (John 10:33–36).

    22. I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life (John 11:24–25).

    23. We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of Man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you (John 12:34–35).

    24. We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. Then said Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin (John 19:7–11).

    5. The Four Commandments for Gentile Converts

    1. Abstain from meats offered to idols (Acts 15:29).

    2. Abstain from blood (Acts 15:29).

    3. Abstain from things strangled (Acts 15:29).

    4. Abstain from fornication (Acts 15:29).

    6. Exhortations to the Unconverted From the Gospel of Matthew

    1. Bring forth fruits meet for repentance (Matthew 3:8).

    2. Every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire (Matthew 3:10; 7:19).

    3. He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire (Matthew 3:12).

    4. Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 4:17).

    5. Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:20).

    6. It is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell (Matthew 5:29).

    7. No man can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon (Matthew 6:24).

    8. Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life and few there be that find it (Matthew 7:13–14).

    9. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but, he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven (Matthew 7:21).

    10. Then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (Matthew 7:23).

    11. Every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand (Matthew 7:26).

    12. Many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8:11–12).

    13. Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead (Matthew 8:22).

    14. That ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house (Matthew 9:6).

    15. I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance (Matthew 9:13).

    16. Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (Matthew 10:28).

    17. Whosoever shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven (Matthew 10:32–33).

    18. He that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it (Matthew 10:38–39).

    19. If the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes (Matthew 11:21).

    20. He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad (Matthew 12:30).

    21. How can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh (Matthew 12:34).

    22. Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned (Matthew 12:36–37).

    23. In the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn (Matthew 13:30).

    24. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:41–42).

    25. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire (Matthew 13:49–50).

    26. This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me (Matthew 15:8).

    27. Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up (Matthew 15:13).

    28. If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch (Matthew 15:14).

    29. Those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart: and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man (Matthew 15:18–20).

    30. I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel (Matthew 15:24).

    31. If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? (Matthew 16:24–26).

    32. Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:3).

    33. It is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. It is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire (Matthew 18:8–9).

    34. The Son of man is come to save that which was lost (Matthew 18:11).

    35. It is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish (Matthew 18:14).

    36. If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me (Matthew 19:21).

    37. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:24). 38. Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life (Matthew 19:29).

    39. The publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but, the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him (Matthew 21:31–32).

    40. Whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder (Matthew 21:44).

    41. Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness (Matthew 22:12–13).

    42. Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s (Matthew 22:21).

    43. Ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves (Matthew 23:13–15).

    44. Ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone (Matthew 23:23).

    45. Ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also (Matthew 23:25–26).

    46. Ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity (Matthew 23:27–28).

    47. Ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets (Matthew 23:31).

    48. Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? (Matthew 23:33).

    49. He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved (Matthew 24:13).

    50. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh (Matthew 25:13).

    51. Cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 25:30).

    52. Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41).

    53. These shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal (Matthew 25:46).

    54. This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins (Matthew 26:28).

    55. All they that take the sword shall perish with the sword (Matthew 26:52).

    7. Fifty Ways to Please God

    1. It becometh us to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew 3:15).
