Riley Sinclair is in charge of the guests at the Atlantic Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. She's been asked to pay special attention to 3 guests--Laine Fulton, a well-known romance author; Tamyra Larsen, a beauty queen; and Winnie Harris, a widowed principal. Each one has their own problem that is keeping them from enjoying life to the fullest, including Riley. Surprisingly, they bond and overcome those issues. There is a hurricane approaching the island too. For much of this book, I was ready to give it a 2.5 star rating. The whole scenario reminded me of old episodes of Fantasy Island where Mr. Roarke would tell Tattoo the problems each guest had. Then Riley shifted from being one of the players in Fantasy Island to being Julie, your cruise director from the Love Boat. It just wasn't totally working for me even though I liked the characters. Then somewhere as the threads of their lives began to resolve and the hurricane was approaching, I became absorbed in the story, really enjoyed it, and didn't want to put it down. This is a work of Christian fiction, and faith does play an integral part of the narrative; however, there are some Christians who will have issues with certain elements in the book. There are discussion questions at the end of the book that would be appropriate for a Christian reading group. This was a perfect read for a time when a hurricane was approaching the Gulf Coast.

Hurricanes in Paradise is a wonderfully written inspirational and riveting novel by a wonderful storyteller. At the famous Atlantis resort in the picturesque Bahamas there is more stirring than the weather as four very different women are soon to find out. Riley Sinclair is seeking a new beginning for her and her small daughter accepting a position at the resort. Best selling author Laine Fulton is seeking information for her next novel and using the resort as background while she deals with demons of her own making. Beauty pageant winner Tamyra Larsen has been hiding from everyone after receiving devastating news, news that will change her life forever. Widow Winnie Harris has been forced on this vacation by her too caring and children. As these three women’s lives connect they will experience a myriad of emotions from fear, hurt, rage and finally redemption when they finally look to the one source who can solve their problems and heal their hearts and souls.Denise Hildreth brings to life for her readers the tropic breezes, the soulful Atlantic ocean and the characters that are obviously close to her heart. Her plot is four overlapping stories that intertwine together to make one beautiful story. Her dialogue is witty and expressively devout. Her characters are far from perfect and yet they are very earnest and honest which makes them unbelievably real. They are well rounded and precocious and funny and sad and readers will find themselves pulled toward each of them while finding similarities to our own struggles as they stumble toward a better road. There are love stories here that are genuine and sweet and there are losses that are hard to comprehend. This is a tale of what was and what can be, a story of loss and of gain, but most of all it’s a story of faith and healing and of how friendship helps get us there.

3 women take a much needed vacation in the Bahamas and are left in the capable hands of resort guest manager Riley Sinclair. Each of the women in the story are fighting their own battle and over the course of a week in paradise they are forced to confront their demons and an impending hurricane. Classified as Christian fiction the book does deal with religion and prayers quiet often, but does not over do it. Hildreth provides a very detailed portrayal of southern live complete with multiple references to the drink of the land- sweet tea and vivid imagery and explanation of many southern themes and sayings.

Overall this was an enjoyable read. I enjoyed most of the characters, although I couldn't quite relate to them and I felt that Winnie was a little over the top ( which I guess was the point). The book flows and moves through although I was disappointed at parts of the ending that felt unbelievable. Other than that the book was a good read for fans of Christian fiction and stories of redemption.
