      Jill was wiping off the last of the dishes when Alec stomped into the kitchen, crumbs falling from his stubby chin to the pristine floor. She had just cleaned it, and he couldn't be bothered to wipe his face before ruining it? Jilly! he barked, stepping close to tower over her. Did you put leftovers in my lasagna? How many times do I have to tell you, not to put leftovers in my food?

      She rolled her eyes at his furious glare. "It's sausage from last night. Can you really taste a difference in one day old sausage? You're always so fussy for being a big strong man."

      It could have germs! I'm a busy man, girl! I can't afford to get sick and miss a day of work.

      Well maybe if you didn't have a gambling addiction, or always lose, you wouldn't have to work so much at your shit job to stay above water.

      I work so you can buy those useless pricey clothes, you ungrateful bitch! And he backhand slapped her.

      She touched her stung lip. I work too... but more importantly, that's the third time you've hit me this month.

      Yeah, and what about it huh?

      Jill's eyes narrowed, and she clenched her fist. She didn't know why she had stayed with him so long after she realized what selfishness his outgoing facade hid. Maybe because she gave him leeway due to what he must've been through during his military service overseas, but this was the last straw. I told you last time, it wouldn't happen again. We're over. Resisting the urge to deck him, she headed for the door.

      It isn't over until I say it's over! Alec grabbed her shoulder, turned her around, and punched her in the face. She stared at him, her rage boiling over. Did he really think he could slap her around? Had he forgotten who she was? She punched him back. He hit her again in return, ducked her next swing and tackled her into the fridge. He threw her aside to the ground. As he approached with a taunting grin, she knocked him back with a kick to the stomach and stood up.

      Now I'll destroy you, she said, raising her fists.

      What makes you think you can do that? You're getting old, Jilly girl!

      Her brow rose.
