About this ebook

Brock and Becca’s family vacation is to be spent on Prince Edward Island, which is off of Canada’s eastern shore. Brock and Becca are excited. Almost as soon as they get there, they meet some pirates. An island is surrounded by water so there are lighthouses to be climbed, beaches to be explored, boat rides, and even an underwater farm that raises mussels. They learn about Lucy Maud Montgomery and Anne of Green Gables. They also stay up late to attend a Scottish Ceilidh (kay-lee) Concert where there is lots of music, dancing and story-telling. Their very last stop on P.E.I. is to be a trip through a Time Travel Tunnel that will take them back to the year 1864. Your children will learn about Canada while being entertained with interesting and exciting stories in the Brock and Becca series.

    CHAPTER 1

Awesome, I said to Dad as he finished talking about our coming holiday on Prince Edward Island.

Mom was busy packing while Dad, Becca, and I had been looking at an Atlas. Dad always said we should not leave home on a holiday without first seeing where we will be going. Prince Edward Island is off the east coast of Canada, and it is not very large.

Before each holiday Mom spends hours on the computer making our travel plans for every day we are away.

Mom does a good job, and it is a lot of work.

Dad plans surprise things that are always fun, and he doesn’t even tell Mom about them until they happen.

What do you want to do on the island, Brock? Dad asked me.

    Play, I said.

    Me, too, Becca shouted.

My little sister Becca always does that. No matter what I say, she either says the same thing or else she copies my idea. I hate that, but I guess when you are only six years old you don’t have any ideas of your own. I’ll soon be nine, so I know almost everything.

I’m sure we will do things that are fun, Dad said. Your mother wants to cover the entire island on this trip. That means we will be spending a fair amount of time in the car. I don’t want either of you asking if we are there yet, so bring lots of things to play with in the car.

Krissy likes to ride in a car, Becca said.

Krissy is Becca’s dumb doll, and the only place she does not go with Becca is to school. Becca says she is not old enough. That’s dumb!

Mom lets Becca and me pack our own toys. That night, before I was in bed, I made sure I had a couple of books, some crayons and a colouring book, a few little cars, a pack of cards, my police whistle, a Frisbee, and a small ball stored in my backpack. I was ready.

I was excited so I woke up early the next morning. When I ran downstairs, Mom was busy in the kitchen.

You could have slept in, Mom said. I told you last night that our plane does not leave until one o’clock this afternoon.

    Where’s Dad? I asked.

He’s gone into work this morning. Now, what would you like for breakfast?

I chose some cereal and toast.

While I was eating, Becca and Krissy appeared. Mom gave her a hug and asked what she would like to eat.

She looked at what I had. Then she pointed at my food and said, That.

    Copycat! I whispered.

Mom! Brock is being mean to me.

    Brock, don’t tease your sister.

I went back to eating. Today was not the day to argue with Mom.

Dad came home early and shortly afterwards we left for the airport.

We arrived in Moncton, New Brunswick at four o’clock. Then we had to pick up a car. Finally we were on the road to Prince Edward Island. They call it P.E.I. for short.

I looked at the scenery as we drove along. I think I could have been anywhere in Canada. Nothing looked different.

Nothing, that is, until we came to the bridge to the island. It was a fairly new bridge. Before it was built everyone would have to take a ferry to get to the island. Now they just drive over to it.

We came to the entrance of the bridge, they call it the Confederation Bridge, and Mom wondered where the tollbooth was.

Dad knew the answer. We only pay when we leave the island, he said. It is the longest bridge in the world over ice-covered water, 12.9 kilometres long.

Finally we were across, and were heading for a hotel in Summerside.

    The hotel was really nice.

I really like this hotel I said as we walked to our rooms. Look at all the places you can sit, and there are potted plants, and trees with lights on them.

We can have a swim in their pool after supper, Dad said.

Cool. Is the pool inside or out?

They have both, Mom answered, but I think we will use the inside one tonight. Do you know what is making me happy? We are going to be here for three nights. I hate having to move to a different hotel everyday.

I’m hungry. Dad said, changing the subject.

Me, too, Becca piped up. "Krissy is tired and she wants to go
