About this ebook
There is nothing Aleron Pitre can't steal, nobody he can't con and no situation he can't slip out ofuntil he's sent to the prison planet Tantoret, where every sentence is death. If the prisoners don't kill each other, they'll die slowly from mining the poisonous drug chojal. Yet Aleron still hopes that he can escape.
Only thirty Athaki guards keep the chaos of Tantoret in check, a race of aliens stronger and faster than their human charges. Most intimidating of all is the head guard, Jasak, who has his own reasons for being sent to Tantoret.
Amidst the darkness and desperation, Aleron and Jasak share an unexpected attraction. An attraction neither can resist when Jasak claims Aleron as his mate to protect him. Then they discover that both guards and inmates are planning a coup, while a traitor from an enemy nation threatens the whole planet. Suddenly escape from Tantoret isn't just Aleron's dreamit's a matter of survival for them both.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I listened to the audiobook. It was good - nice and long and had a good reader. The reader was a bit over-serious and portentous, but that actually matched well with Jasak, who is also over-serious and portentous, so it worked.
I liked the chemistry between the main characters, and I always like a good alien lover, and Jasik was very appealing indeed. There is a scene with licking which was way hotter than I would ever have thought it would be. Warning though - Jasak's species is a bit, well, vampire like - if you have a blood squick, give this one a miss.
The first three quarters of the story were really excellent. The prison environment was vivid and the peril felt scary and real. The last quarter though - it wasn't bad, exactly, better than most in the genre, but it didn't live up to the first three quarters. Everything was coming to a head, the various factions and conspiracies were gelling, and time was running short, and then stuff just kind of resolved. The two main characters kind of blundered around and had things happen to them instead of being clever and making things happen. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story, interesting characters, hot sex. What more could you want?!?
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really enjoyed Craig’s “On the Ragged Edge of the World”, so when I saw this one I didn’t hesitate. Like their previous work, this was an edgy romance with a solid plot and an unusual setting. Usually, I find the SciFi element in an M/M romance lacking because insufficient time is given to world-building. However, the authors did an excellent job of bringing it to life here. Aleron is thief who trusts the wrong person to sleep with, and ends up in prison. Again. Only this time, the prison is more a death sentence. Tantoret has a secret mining operation for a dangerous drug that is illegal in the Athess system, but which they use to fund their war with the Lonans. Jasak, an alien Athakim, is the warden. The guards are also prisoners on Tantoret, and Jasak feels he belongs there for the crime he committed. Until Aleron. Aleron has a vibrancy and life about him that captures Jasak’s attention, and ultimately his heart. This prison love story manages to be more realistic than is often the case. Aleron’s motivation, at first, is to get close to Jasak in hopes of devising a means of escape. Makes sense. Jasak has been lonely and disheartened for so long that Aleron sparks something he thought dead. The relationship builds very slowly in this story. It’s more than halfway through before any intimacy happens. And that time was spent building the characters, the setting and the universe. It was time well spent. When they do finally become a couple, the sex is spicy and exciting for having to wait for it. I really enjoyed this story, but would have liked a bit more fallout after the HEA, which could happen in a potential sequel where prisoners become rebels. I really hope that happens. Recommended!
