Keys to the Kingdom - Rodney Fereday

    Introduction

This is simply a dozen sermon outlines on Matthew’s Gospel. They by no means pretend to be anything other than my own simplistic thoughts about the various sermon topics. As you will see, I am not an academic. My thinking is not linear. I was described at theological college as a ‘blob’ thinker because I dropped individual thoughts, seemingly ad-hoc (here and there), into my writing. But like the spokes of a wheel, each thought points toward the hub, or to the core of the gospel.

My words don’t flow as the pages of a novel because (basically) they are the musings of my mind as I seek to understand the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Matthew; their true effectiveness lays in the timing of delivery, the silent pauses and emphasis on words. Please bear this in mind as you read the text.

    Short Background on Matthew’s Gospel

Matthew, Mark and Luke are collectively known as ‘the synoptic’ gospels, which mean they are very similar and can be compared together. Each one, nevertheless, differs from the other slightly; some have omissions in much the same way that a witness statement in a court of law may vary as they are viewed from different angles. It is in the slight differences and emphasis that together, taken as a whole, they are credible and point to the truth. In fact if witness statements were exactly the same it would indicate collusion, and bring doubt as to their credibility. Yet together, they are totally believable and add a richness and depth to the gospel stories.

The little we know about Matthews is written in Matthew 9:9. We are told he was a tax collector, that would make him literate and systematic in his approach thus enabling him to put his account into the written form; unlike some of the other disciples who followed Jesus - being simple fishermen they would not have been as educated.

The main point to remember is that Matthew was a Jew and he was writing for the Jewish readership. One of his main themes was linking Old Testament prophecy to New Testament theology, teaching that Jesus came not to destroy the Law but to fulfil it. We can see this over sixteen times in his gospel, as he writes: ‘This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophets.’

There is also a strong apocalyptic interest in Matthew’s writing. A strong interest in all that Jesus said about his second coming, which Matthew knew was important to the Israel.

The following twelve sermon outlines are in chronological order, given by chapter, verse and titled as outlined in the table of contents on page five of this book.

The Journey of the Wise Men (Matthew 2: 1-12)

If we were to go on a journey half of the fun would be planning the route, where we would stay at night, the costs, the time it would take, what and where we would eat and of course distance to travel and time needed to get there. There would be so much to plan.

These days with satellite navigation systems and computers, which give every detail of the journey, things can be so much easier and give the traveller so
