For Isabella, my little traveler…
Introduction
Six years have passed since my first collection of poetry was put together, entitled Quill and Ink. Ever since that time I have been writing poems mainly during my travels. Over the years I have had the great fortune to travel to many wonderful places with my wife and daughter and with my immediate family. My wife and daughter and I especially love to visit the Hawaiian Islands, as you will no doubt notice here. But we have also visited many other places such as the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and various locations throughout the United States. In my youth, I also had the privilege of traveling to Europe on more than one occasion. I am very thankful for these times and can only hope we may still be able to do these things together in the future.
In travel, we go for the escape, the opportunity to get away from it all, and hopefully, to see some wondrous things! In nature we see beauty, new life, vibrant colors and many other things that capture our imagination. We find ourselves transported and welcome the relaxation that comes with it. This is all the reason why we take time away for ourselves during our busy lives. To reconnect with our home that is Earth and with one another as well. To enjoy God’s gift to us in every sense. It is at these times we so often like to capture and savor the moments with photographs and buying keepsakes so we can remind ourselves of such wonderful times.
But there is another way that we can remember our travels and good times, and that is in writing. I like to write poems that celebrate the joy of travel and the elation that comes with being away. It is in this medium I like to express my appreciation for my destination and the journey itself. Through poetry, I like to transport my mind as well as the senses and imagine these lands in former times. What it may have been like for others to experience these same places during their lifetime.
The following is a collection of such poems, written over many years of travel. I am pleased to present them to you now in hopes that you will appreciate the wonder and beauty of travel as much as I do. At the end of each poem, I have indicated the region or destination with which each poem was written. Enjoy!
The Hana Sun Does Shine
Driving round, rolling switchback that climbs through the hills.
Stepping down, red cinder the sands ‘round the bend.
Like a cloak being pulled to reveal
A flowing wind through the trees you can feel.
So look now, wild beasts as they flow through the lens.
Waterfalls, like a brides veil that calms me within.
Pull the car to the side for the view
The beauty is framed next to you.
Planted by dawn’s seeds
To grow the truthful tale.
I have assumed my post
Under our humble hale.
So then with you my love
We may renew
To wish this for so long in your arms
Sing me the song that welcomes
To this tropical paradise.
No more clouds, just flowing leaves and African tulips.
Brightly now, the
