About this ebook

A New Year, a New You..?

Do you try, year after year, to make resolutions that you honestly believe you can stick to, only to see them tumble by the wayside before January is out? Or have you actually managed to achieve something through this annual ritual? Are your resolutions truly realistic or do you start with high hopes only to find them out of reach?

This little volume looks, through quotes from many sources, at the whole business of trying to change ourselves for the better, not only at the turn of the year but in a wider context too. There are anecdotes, facts, reminiscences, ideas, inspiring and wise words for you to reflect on, to help you manage your own program of change, or make you feel better about having at least tried.

    Introduction

Are you among those who, immediately after Christmas, start to formulate Grand Plans for the coming year, to begin immediately on the stroke of midnight come January the first? You may know them under their more usual name of New Year Resolutions (the capitals show how important they are!); you may also be familiar with the realisation, by the end of January, that you have either forgotten what you had resolved because the list was too long and you’ve mislaid the paper it was jotted on, or that those you do remember were simply unmanageable! One of my own resolutions, for instance, was not to write in extremely long sentences but as you can see from the sentence before this one, I didn’t quite manage it.

Why do we set ourselves up for failure every year? Well, to start with, knowing our shortcomings and wanting to do something about them is a good thing, isn’t it? And having a significant date to aim for gives us a kick-start – or so we hope, especially if we know that millions of others are doing the same thing, whether it’s giving up smoking, eating more sensibly or being kind to next door’s cat.

So what stops us from succeeding? Maybe in your case, nothing; but for a lot of us, there’s that factor we refer to as Real Life, which gives us reasons (or excuses, depending on your viewpoint) for not being able to live up to the high standards we think we should be able to achieve – and again, we’re in the good company of millions of others, evident from many of the quotes in this book.

I’ve chosen quotes from many varied sources, from historical and contemporary personalities both well-known and obscure. Their subject matter revolves around the central theme of Change in its many aspects – which is, of course, what New Year and resolutions are all
