Vie Herlocker, author and editor, “Funny...entertaining... Éclair resembles a modern-day Junie B. Jones.
“Kid-friendly… page-turning fun… adventure with real-life challenges,” said Crystal Bowman, best-selling children’s book author and speaker.
Eccentric Grandma Stella is taking in boarders. Not the kind that talk, but the kind that neigh. Horses. When seven-year-old Éclair meets the first boarder and its owner, a girl Éclair’s age who’s dressed like a gypsy, the girl says her horse can read minds and will cast a spell on Éclair. Does the horse really have magic? If so, maybe the horse could make Éclair’s secret wish come true.

She grew up in the burbs of Detroit with five brothers. No sisters. Each time her mom brought the boy bundle home Michelle cried, certain her mom liked boys better than girls. But when her brothers pitched in with the cooking, cleaning, and babysitting—without drama, Michelle discovered having brothers wasn’t so bad. They even taught her how to take direct criticism without flinching, which might come in handy with book reviews. Eclair Meets a Gypsy - M. Weidenbenner
Chapter One – The Gypsy and a Girl
My name is Emily Clair, but my friends call me Éclair. A few weeks ago I went to live with Stella, my grandma, and now I don’t have any friends. I hope it won’t take me long to make new ones who will call me Éclair too.
When Mom got sick and had to go away to get better, Dad needed to find another job. My sister and I went to live with Stella on her farm. She’s my grandma, but she likes for me to call her Stella. She thinks that name doesn’t sound old. But it does.
I like Stella, but I really missed my mom. Mom went to a place like a hospital that was supposed to make her smile more.
My only choices for playmates on the farm were Meggie, my two-year-old sister, or the animals in the barn. I usually played with the animals because they didn’t whine or cry like Meggie did. Meggie’s naptime was the best part of my day because that was the only time she didn’t whine.
My story started when the wind had just blown the rain away, and the summer’s sun finally came out. Drumstick was washing his feathers in the puddles. He’s the mean rooster that used to chase me—until I became the boss of him.
I was in the pasture with Lightning, my new BFF. Lightning was a rescued horse. He was skinny and sick and had sores all over his body because someone didn’t treat him right. Then Stella saved him. She brought him to her farm and healed him. He liked me because I let him eat the greenest grass right out of my hand. His lips curled, and he made a munching sound like it was so yummy. It wasn’t. I ate some once, and it was gross. I spit it out. Why did he think it tasted good?
Stella waved at me from the back porch and walked toward the gate. She wore jeans, a white shirt with gold sparkles, and her jewelry belt—the one with colored gemstones. Stella was different. I think she liked to play dress-up and pretend she was a cowgirl. She had red and purple hair, and sometimes she wore a cowboy hat.
She lifted her pink cowgirl boot onto the fence. Éclair, I’ve decided to take in a few boarders,
she said.
Boarders?
I asked.
Horses,
she said. We have several extra stalls in the barn, so I put an ad in the paper to see if there were horses that needed a place to stay.
But horses can’t read,
I said.
Stella chuckled. You’re right, but hopefully their owners can.
She nodded toward the truck and trailer that pulled into the driveway. Looks like our first boarder is here now.
The white truck climbed the steep driveway. Its tires crunched on the rocks. The driver pulled all the way to Stella’s pink barn then turned around so the trailer was closest to the pasture where I stood. A black and white horse with long, flowing hair peeked out the window.
Lightning trotted to the fence and watched the new horse. I watched too.
The lady driver climbed out of the truck. Two long, dark braids hung past her shoulders. She wore a purple top and jeans. She reached for Stella’s hand. "Hi,
