      INTRODUCTION

      A SHORT SÁAMI HISTORY LESSON AND INTRODUCTION TO DRØ THE FINDER

      The Sáami People

      History, as I perceive it, is written by slope-browed, slack-jawed, knuckle-dragging mouth breathers that have built armies throughout recorded time for the purpose of destroying other civilizations. As evidenced in many history books, most are a compendium of exploits by the aggressors and their conquered prey. History, it is alleged, is determined by the victorious. This is the rule and not the exception. So it probably comes as a surprise for many that a once sizeable tribe of people, the Sáami (Saw-Mee), having gone relatively unnoticed for thousands of years, still exist today. I am a direct line descendant of these people. My maternal ancestors came from Donna Island, Norway, south of the Arctic Circle, and the paternal side came from the Värmland region of Sweden.

      The Sáami (also spelled Sámi or Sami) are not a people to build armies. They never had a warrior class and never invaded lands to displace weaker cultures. Harmony with nature and all existing things was a characteristic of these gentle people. It still is today.

      With an inherent ability to avoid conflicts and a savvy spirit of resolve, the Sáami maintained an isolated society on the Sapmi Continent (Sawp-Mee) until about the time of the Bronze and Iron Ages. When the other tribes of humanity from the fertile crescent of mid-east Asia migrated west, the Sáami would move further north into the primeval forests & tundra to avoid conflicts. The Celts were the first to invade European Sapmi at about 1,000 (B.C.) Eventually the Sáami would settle into the Fennoscandia region of Scandinavia. This is where they were finally pushed to the brink by Germanic Viking invaders from Northern Europe. Subjected to the harsh realities of acquiescent exile, you will find the Sáami people here today.

      Sapmi existed for more than 20,000 years since before the period of the most recent ice age in what is today more commonly known as the European continent. Its inhabitants, the Sáami people were the first and only indigenous peoples of Europe as recognized in anthropological circles. Originally descendants of the Chukchi peoples of Western Asia, it is noteworthy to mention that two tribes of Chukchi set out on a migration at about the same time. One travelling west over the Ural Mountains to become the Sáami and the other Chukchi venturing across the Bering land bridge soon to become established as the Eskimos. They were the seed for all the Indian tribes of the western hemisphere.

      As a people that most of the world has never heard of before now, the Sáami have given Mankind many marvellous celebrations and inventions:

      The Winter Solstice celebration of Yule and the tradition of bringing evergreens into the home. Originally it celebrated the longest hours of darkness in the year with eating, drinking and musical participation in the singing of Joiks (Spirit singing & Story-Telling). Originally attributed to the Germanic Peoples of the 4th century, the Sáami Yule predates this tradition by several thousand years. Today Christmas is celebrated near the solstice ever since it was assigned the date of December 25th in the 4th century by the Western Christian Church council.

      Snow Skis – The earliest relic evidence found has been dated back more than 5,000 years. Used in a similar fashion as a modern cross country ski, they were held in place on the foot by a leather strap on the ski. The strap looped over a traditional Sáami reindeer skin boot that had a large curled up toe point. These boots are depicted as elf shoes in fairy tales. This method of binding did exceedingly well to hold the skis in place under the foot.

      The Long Boat – this invention was originally attributed to the Vikings. Yes, it too is a Sáami development along with other boat-building techniques that were taught to the Vikings in excess of a thousand years ago.

      The Kalevala – An Epic tale assembled from the Sáami musical Joiks, which are of a truly inspirational level, was a significant influence in the writings of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and J.R.R. Tolkien. In the Forward of the 1898 & 99 leather-bound editions of Hiawatha, Nathan Haskell Dole wrote praise for this twenty-three thousand line poem. In it, he quoted Dr. Max Müller as declaring The Kalevala "Will claim its place as the fifth national epic of the world, side by side with the Ionian Songs, with the Mah bh rata, the Shah’ N meh and the Nibelundgen". One phrase Tolkien is often quoted as originating is Not all who wander are lost. This is, as a point of fact, a paraphrased Sáami Joik referring to the seasonal Reindeer herding that is part of their semi-nomadic lifestyle.

      A discussion of accomplishments would not be complete without mentioning at least one well known Sáami celebrity. Oscar winning actress Renee Zellweger is Norwegian Sáami by her mother from the Kirkenes and Ekkerøy areas of Finnmark county in northern Norway. Another celeb of note listed as Sáami on hundreds of web sites is singer/song writer Joni Mitchell. She used to tell of her paternal grandfather, who came from the Lofoten Islands in Norway as having Sáami blood. However, with the help of several Norwegian genealogists with a familiarity of the families in the Nordland region in Norway, Joni reports through her website that they concluded she is not of Sáami lineage.

      Who is Drø the Finder?

      I never thought it was odd that, since the age of three I had an ancestral spirit protecting and guiding me. To me, it was normal. I never knew it any other way. While other children had imaginary friends that only they could see, I had a real one that was invisible – even to me. He speaks to me in a crystal clear voice resonating in my head relating with an intense and passionate understanding of what I was told or instructed. I was never visited by disembodied spirits, spooks or ghosts with flashy illumination or cheesy sound affects; it was always that voice that enveloped me. As loud and as clear as if he is standing behind Me, Sometimes thundering! That, dear reader, is scary enough without any cheap theatrics.

      Whether I obeyed Drø’s guidance or not… well, I was after all, three years old and just as precocious as the next kid. During the later years, I was still, at times, a bit less-than-obliging as any testy child or know-it-all teenager or bossy 20-something can be. Like I said, this was normal to me.

      Drø the Finder (Drôô or Drew) was a tribal ancestor in my family’s lineage from more than a thousand years ago. He was a Sáami Noiade (noydeh), or Shaman-Medicine Man, in the same vein as an American Indian Medicine Man – No big surprise there since we are related by ancestry and share common rites passed down from the Chukchi. The Noiade healed the sick, dispensed medicines & advice, interpreted the signs from the forest flora & fauna and served as the tribal Seer and Finder of Lost Things. He was the finder of lost and forgotten priorities. He was the finder of all things ethereal and material, whether they were lost people or opportunities or fortunes or reindeer herds or the love of your life or just everyday necessities. If you truly had a need, you went to him for help. It was the occupation of all Sáami Noiades.

      Now, as his descendant tribal progeny, I had his undivided attention as my teacher and guide whether I wanted it or not. It is in these following pages that I will reveal what I have been taught over a lifetime. Not all of this knowledge pertains only to me. It pertains to EVERYONE - Sometimes surreal, but, always valuable in one way or another. I hope it is as eye-opening to you as others have found it to be. In this book, Drø will be quoted in a free verse form of didactic poetry such as:

      Each quote will be the general topic for that section. I will interpret all that I know to be true and just.
