About this ebook

When fourteen-year-old William Remington discovers that he comes from a long line of time travelers, that is only the beginning of what proves to be a daring adventure. Unearthing this long-held family secret and finding a seemingly benign cloth catapults him into Middle Ages England.

Sucked into a time warp, he will have to rely on his wits in order to free himself and young Trea, both of them endangered by the sorcerer Mandrak. Trea's mother, also a pawn of the sorcerer's, brings them even more danger as she dabbles in magic spells. If Mandrak manages an escape from the legendary emerald, his threat to devastate life on Earth will come to fruition.

William's efforts to stop the sorcerer could prove fatal if Trea aids the sorcerer in a bid to save her mother. As the pendulum swings, William faces a mighty battle that offers no guarantee of survival. The final risk could be the ultimate price; both their young lives.

    About Time Chaser

Fourteen year-old William Remington comes from a long line of time travelers ... he just doesn't know it yet. After finding an old tapestry that his father tried to burn, William is scared by what the tapestry reveals. It shows him a life he knows nothing about. His own life. When he's sucked into Middle Ages England, he must learn to survive on his wits. There he meets Trea, a girl whose mother is captivated and held captive by a sorcerer and his book of spells. Trea has her own deadly secrets which might get both of them killed if they can't find a way out of the maze of time they're both stuck inside.

With dragons in the skies, magical horses and an alternate universe, Time Chaser is a Young Adult time travel fantasy with a twist.

    Prologue

    ~ William ~

Eight-year-old William Remington stared at his father, mesmerized as always by the bigger- than-life stories his dad had in plenty supply.

What happened after you saw the dragon with its green scales and fiery eyes in the sky? he asked now, his voice hushed in the living room. His four-year-old sister, Jenny, sat wide-eyed beside him, as did their twin cousins Nate and Rose.

His dad threw back his head, his blond hair brushing his collar as he laughed for a moment. What do you think happened, William? he finally asked, a bright twinkle in his green eyes.

Excited, William jumped up. "I think the dragon wanted you to go through the seas and into the white mist. You and Mama and your crew aboard the Merry Maiden didn't know if the dragon was going to burn you to a crisp or eat you, but then you came out of the mist and you sailed to port!" William said triumphantly. He knew the story by heart and never tired of hearing it.

Erik Remington looked at his son then lifted him up in the air until William squealed with delight. I think I should let you tell the stories henceforth, his father said with a grin.

Nate and Rose jumped up and down, asking for their turn to be lifted into the air and swung around.

Erik! his mother exclaimed as his father set Rose back down on the carpet after a spin. His dad turned to Mom standing in the living room doorway. What is all that screaming? She lifted a brow, smiling. You've been telling the stories again, she said.

William looked at his mother. But, Mom, they're not just stories. He didn't miss the glance his parents exchanged. He looked at his father. Tell her they're true, Dad, tell Mom.

His father moved over to William's mother and put his face down to hers and he grinned. He kissed her and said, They're true, my Lily, then put his arms around her and lifted her off the floor. I concede, she said. I concede. You win. They're all true. They laughed as he spun her around the room.

Okay, young lads and ladies, his dad exclaimed, time to go outside and roust the enemy.

Are we wrestling today, Dad? William asked, excited. He loved his dad's training games. They got to wrestle and practice with toy swords against straw dummies. His father and Uncle Darien emphasized the importance of the sword training to be used only for survival.

No wrestling today, his dad said. Today there will be a new survival skill. Our long suffering dummies shall learn the effectiveness of cane sparring.

    ##

Fed on his father's stories of a magical kingdom full of danger and adventure, William settled to bed each night and lay under the round attic window, staring up at the moon and the stars. In the moonlit shadows, he stared at the seaman's chest at the foot of his bunk, full of his toys, the shelving built into his headboard, and the nautical instruments on his old wood desk across the room. He'd convinced his parents for his eighth birthday to let him have this attic room where he could pretend he was master of his own sailing vessel. And of course her name was the Merry Maiden, just like in his dad's stories.

His dad helped him make the room like a captain's cabin. It had been so much fun creating this room, and he felt he really belonged here. When they'd cleared the attic, he'd found some of the same kinds of maritime instruments that his dad talked about in his stories. He'd begged his dad to take him sailing, since he knew so much about the sea, but that was the one thing he'd been refused. He'd thought one time dad would take him, but Mom had stood there, a set, almost frightened look on her face, and Dad had said regretfully it wasn't possible.

Around and around in his head went the stories. Fantastical tales of evil sorcerers, dragons, castles and the search for a magical gem. They were so real to him he felt as if he'd lived in those times far and away from here. Each of his cousins loved the stories his dad and Uncle Darien could tell, but he seemed to be the only one who played out the stories in the Catskill Mountain woods that were his backyard. He thought often of his own adventures and the stories he would tell one day!

Due to the icy road conditions today school had been cancelled, so William and Nate had a great time skidding across the iced-over pond between their properties. The air had a bite to it, the frost line high up on the mountains around them and still a hint of snow in the air. With the temperatures dropping to minus twelve during the night, everything was thoroughly frozen.

Around lunchtime William started to get hungry.

I'm going for lunch, Nate, he said, and they made plans to play video games at his cousin's house after lunch. William headed home across the small meadow behind his house when he saw Uncle Darien and his dad had started a bonfire. Piled high was the old wood from a barn they'd taken down and a brush pile where they'd cleared land for their expanding horse farm.

Neither his father nor uncle had seen him yet, so he skirted the meadow and dove into a thick cover of trees, gleefully thinking to creep up on them and give them a bit of a startle. It was a hard thing to do since there seemed to be little that scared either of them, but he was always game to try.

Creeping on hands and knees, glad he had on the heavy woolen mittens his mom had made him, William crept closer to where the men stood with their backs to him.

His uncle rubbed his hands together in the cold and turned to his dad. Well, so how many times have you tried to burn that tapestry? he asked.

Preparing to spring up with a yell from the bushes, William paused. He could see them in profile as his dad said with a bit of uncharacteristic impatience, The sixth time. You'd think I could get rid of it for good, but it just comes back. It gives me the jitters having it here. I told Lily I'd try again.

His dad used his boot to prod a roll of cloth a little longer than a paper
