- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A very entertaining mystery that is perfect for lower elementary students. The play on words with a bug twist as well as the similes and metaphors will keep them laughing while also learning a little bit about the true traits of some insects.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A cute book for grades 1-4. Ace Lacewing: Bug Detective is about Ace Lacewing who lives in Motham City and lives by the motto "bad bugs are my business." Using a lot of old Hollywood crime drama themes, Ace Lacewing is on the hunt for the kidnapped Queenie Bee. With the help of Sergeant Zito the mosquito and Xerces Blue, his girlfriend, Ace Lacewing hunts down the kidnapper and saves the Queen of all Honey. The book was very cute and it was filled with insect information that didn't feel cumbersome to the reader as it was laced into the story and the illustrations were fun and colorful. Definitely a book to have for little ones.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5"There was so much to do. We felt like little larvae again and almost forgot we were on a case." (Biedrzycki, 2009, no pg)Ace Lacewing, bug detective, is back again with his friends Xerces and Zito to crack the case of the stolen dough. Scratch Murphy's flea bag is robbed and Ace Lacewing, debonaire bug, searches Six Legs Park for clues. This is a who-done-it style of story and is dialogue-driven. The colorful illustrations are large and stylish. The story pays homage to the detective genre and the gumshoe-bug-hero is sure to save the day. It is a mature enough storyline and plot to hold the attention of a young juvenile reader. There is strong vocabulary and contains the nuances of a crime story that requires a certain maturity to fully marinate. It is imaginative and catchy with its flair and flow.
