About this ebook
Swallowing Disorders: Managing Dysphagia in the Elderly is a reference guide developed by a speech pathologist to assist caregivers, particularly those with elderly parents or those caring for aging individuals with chewing and swallowing disorders. It is written in layman's terms with clinical information provided and explained in detail with a review of both normal anatomy and function as well as signs and symptoms of a chewing and swallowing disorder. Modified diets and safety strategies are discussed as well as information on formal tests that utilize instruments to determine the nature and severity of the swallowing problem. Links to videos and external support sites are provided within the book for further understanding of normal and disordered swallowing as well as how to thicken liquids.

What this book is: This book is written for you, the caregiver. Though it is written for people who do not have a medical background, it may be a resource guide medical professionals can use for their patients, students, certified nursing assistants and home healthcare workers.
What this book is not: This book is not a substitute for medical, nutritional or legal advice, or the advice of the SLP you may be working with at present. You should consult your physician about any changes in medical status including difficulty chewing and/or swallowing foods. If you or someone you are caring for has a medical condition such as aspiration pneumonia, difficulty swallowing or is coughing or choking during meals, please contact his physician immediately.
Introduction
If you are sitting down to a delicious meal right now, you are doing something that millions of people, affected by a swallowing disorder, are unable to do. Many elderly or neurologically impaired individuals can no longer enjoy a traditional holiday meal or even drink a glass of water without fear of choking or developing a lung infection.
While dysphagia (the technical term for a swallowing disorder) occurs in both adult and pediatric populations, the focus of this guide is identifying the symptoms exhibited by elderly people afflicted with dysphagia, and what you, the caregiver, can do to compensate for the loss of chewing and swallowing abilities.
Swallowing disorders arise from a variety of causes in the elderly, primarily from neurological changes brought on by diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease or by cardiovascular events such as stroke.
The terms dysphagia
and swallowing disorder
are used interchangeably in this book to streamline information. Though there are different types of dysphagia and varying degrees of severity, the terms generally mean the same thing. For consistency, the term patient or individual is used to describe those afflicted with a chewing or swallowing disorder. Men and women both acquire dysphagia through similar means. The information in this book applies to both genders.

Eating is simple, right? You take a bite of food, chew it and swallow it. It sure seems easy until something happens to make chewing and swallowing a chore. Something that
