Chapter 1 Checking on the Riley Family

Spring time had come to Laramie, Wyoming Territory; and here and there some folks had coaxed some flowers to grow. Ranchers were moving cattle around in search of new grass. The cattle had grown thin over the winter. It was not unusual to see cattle driven down the main street in Laramie. You could hear the cowboys whoop and holler at the steers to keep them moving.

Buck Benson, now a Marshal of Laramie City, sat at his desk in an office in Laramie that he shares with his deputy Marshal Charlie (Bart) Burton. Bart was deep in thought a short time after Buck had made him aware of the gang’s reputation for violence. You know Buck, Bart drawled. That bunch of trash had to have come through the pass. That means that they passed by the Riley homestead. The Riley family with the exception of Jack Hansom’s wife Beth
