About this ebook

Max Winters is comfortable in her behind-the-scenes wunderkind role on Holt Lasher’s crime fighting team. Eventually, she’d like more responsibility in the field, but that only happens after Holt says you’re ready. When Holt’s team is asked to help bust an organized car theft ring and Whitney “Dubs” Williams is released from prison with the sole purpose of helping Holt in that pursuit, Holt turns to Max to be Dubs’ minder. As in, handcuffed together, 24/7 minder of an unreformed, young, hot, cocky thief. The lines blur between legal and illegal, real and façade, the longer the two women spend together. But Max isn’t willing to risk her heart for the entertainment of a criminal. In order to prove herself, Dubs has to make sure her feelings can’t be misinterpreted. But will she survive her grand gesture?

Author

Jesse J. Thoma

Jesse Thoma splits her professional time between graduate school and work. She is a project manager in a clinical research lab and spends a good amount of time in methadone clinics and prisons collecting data and talking to people.Jesse grew up in Northern California but headed east for college. She never looked back, although her baseball allegiance is still loyally with the San Francisco Giants. She has lived in New England for ten years and has finally learned to leave extra time in the morning to scrape snow off the car. Jesse is blissfully married and is happiest when she is out for a walk with her wife and their dog, pretending she still has the soccer skills she had as an eighteen-year-old, eating anything her wife bakes, or sitting at the computer to write a few lines.

I seem to be stumbling into second books in serieses recently. In the case of this one it meant that I was a little bit lost at first, but once I got into the story and figured out who the characters were and how they related to one another the narrative started flowing. And at times, yikes, it flowed over the page fast and furiously. The book is about two couples (or more specifically a maybe couple and an established couple. The established couple is Holt, a bounty hunter, and Isabelle. They haven't been together long, but I do believe that the story of their meeting and getting together is in the first book in this series, 'The Chase'. They're interesting characters in this book, but, I do think that reading the first book probably would have helped me appreciate the two characters even more. The maybe couple is Max and Dubs. Max works for Holt, while Dubs is a former car thief who gets released from prison to help Holt out on a case. They're trying to bust open and put away a new and dangerous car theft ring in Providence. And the two of them wind up literally cuffed to each other for awhile. While I liked the uniqueness of the characters, the plot, and the writing. I think my favorite part of the novel was how the setting of Rhode Island and more specifically Providence was described/written about. Authors can get the right 'things' about a city/state correct more often than not these days with a little elbow grease and research. But this novel had not just those correct 'things', but also had the feel of Rhode Island and Providence. It was a good book, in what seems like a very interesting series.I got this advanced galley through Netgalley on behalf of Bold Strokes Books.
