My grandparents’ garden was truly a delight to behold and my secret pleasure. It was filled with colorfully arranged, delicate plants that bloomed throughout the spring and summer. My love of color was ignited and enriched by this treasured garden and by the wildflowers that grew in the open fields around our cottage in the Canadian countryside. I often filled an old porcelain pitcher we found at a flea market with huge bouquets of flowers, greenery, and delicate ferns. I thought then—and still do now—how grand!
A Bag Full of Ribbons
Growing up with a mom who sewed her children’s wardrobes was common during the 1960s. My mom made matching outfits for herself, my sister, and me, and with the leftover fabric she made sure our Barbies all had fabulous duds too! As a kid, I remember saving up the package labels from the bindings and trims that she used, to send back to the manufacturer. In return, we would receive a bag full of odd bits of ribbons and lace. I learned how to make my first ribbonwork flower, the Rosette, from the directions provided in one of those goodie
packets.
